Have I heard right that the bottles of water you buy from the shop are poisonous?
By this I mean: you keep filling up this bottle at the gym with water and over a period of time the plastic bottle degrades with quality and subsequently becomes poisonous?
True or is it false?
Any answers appreciated

I make water bottles. Those clear water bottles are usually made from a type of plastic called PET. They do not break down over time. Where that might have some truth is the fact that most PET bottles cannot be washed in hot water without warping. So you might have a sanitation problem from not washing them properly. However, if you only use them for water, a mild detergent in warm water will probably do just nicely. If you use them for a sugar-based drink, that might be a bit more of a problem. Also, some of the new PETs are biodegradable. I don't know much about them yet. But I sincerely doubt the FDA would allow a toxic material for a food container.

The "heavier" reusable bottles made from HDPE (like the bicycle riders use) are usually washable in hot water, and should last as long as you like. Again, the plastic does not break down, it's just a sanitation issue.

Check the bottom of the bottle to find out. The recycle code will tell you.

Sounds highly false. If you think something like that is happening, but another type of water bottle. There's lots of different kinds. Just don't heat the bottle or put overly hot water inside of there, and you should be fine. Really, though, you should be alright no matter what. Swallowing plastic isn't a real big deal.

My dad said that if you keep freezing water over the night and then filling the rest of it with water and keep doing that that you can get a disease. But just change your bottle every now and then and as long as you empty the left over water at the end of day you are ok. Hope this helped!

It's not poison, but it can develop a bacteria for reusing the same water bottle. Just throw it away and use a new bottle of water each time. It's not like they are expensive.

I heard it too. But if the quality of the plastic is "A" class and they aren't using the cheap plastics - nothing is going to hurt.
But if cheap plastics are being used - then perhaps it can cause damage over a while.

False. However you get bacteria into the bottle and unless it is washed properly between fillings the bacteria reproduce like bunnies.

I heard something like that too. I should be careful because I often reuse the same bottle and put water in it. (I always bring water to work for my lunches.)

I don't know if it's true though. :-(

That sounds interesting and like a theory that needs to be more thoroughly researched. I can not tell you if it's true or false because I don't have enough information.

All plastic containers outgas some hazarous products, but in such a small quantity that you would have to EAT thousands of containers before you would have any sort of toxic reaction.
