Is a combination of "panty" and "hose", which is short for hosiery and one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century behind only the computer, internet and disposable diapers and feminine hygiene products.

The "hose" part is short for hosiery, which were a stocking that came up to the mid-thigh and you had to wear garter belt to hold them up and they usually had a big black seam in the back where they were sewn up. The more expensive types were made out of silk...not sure what the cheap stuff was made out of but made your legs sweat and itch and it always seems like those darn garter belts with weird clamp things with metal and rubber that were digging into you when you were trying to sit, like when you were in church.

Girls today have it so lucky that they can go to the tanning booth and tan and not have to bother with any type of hose, but being old school, I still love my panty hose!

Long before panty hose there were just hose. They were hose shaped and held up by garters. Someone decided they could attach a panty to them and get rid of the garters. They became panty hose. Most women also wear panties with them though.

Nylons used to be called hose. When they comboned the panties with the stocking, they called them pantyhose, (panties and hose.)
