Yes, I have often wondered about this myself. As a child I was raised Catholic. I did not feel comfortable with the religion. My brothers, both altar boys.

My one brother announced at his 16th birthday party that he was gay. My family wonders if his time spent, (almost constantly) at church had anything to do with that decision after hearing about the priest and their escapades.

But of course, Christians do no wrong. And yet they feel they have the right to down other religions, simply because we chose to believe in other deities. And now does anyone wonder why some shun the christian religion?

And what about Jim and Tammy Baker? Another shining example of Christianity.

Oh over the years we all have heard about the christian clergy full of scandles and flith. I for one am glad I left the religion some 20 years ago, having never once second thought my decision to become Wiccan. (not saying there are not bad folks among us either. But face our clergy rarely make the news.)

And then they feel they have the right to down other religions? People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

OK, first, just because someone labels themself "Christian" does NOT make them a Christian, anymore than going to McDonalds makes you a burger.
A Christian is one who confesses Jesus and OBEYS his teachings.
Secondly, many people are Christians. However, like you, and you, and, yes you, they are all sinners. You see, a Christian struggles with exactly the same temptations and desires that every other human has.
You say that, since these folks are hypocrites for their behaviour, what does that make you? Have you ever lied? Cheated? Stolen (even online music or software)? Have you ever done something after succumbing to your lusts that you knew was wrong, bad, even evil? Do you expect all of us to shun you and call you a hypocrite because of that?
Christianity is God reaching out to you, me, every human being ever born, whether alive now, in the past, and even to the future, saying, you can't do enough to earn my respect or forgiveness...you've screwed it up so badly, there's nothing in it for you, except eternal punishment. Here, have a hand out of your sewer pit.
That's what Christianity is all about...if someone practices forgiveness, then, he's showing God-qualities. If someone is judgmental and condemnng, he is showing satan's qualities. Which are you?

I'm a christian but I'm not catholic. Priests are totally in the wrong. God never intended celibacy to be enforced.

In fact, in the Middle Ages, the Catholic church turned a blind eye to monks and priests having wives or mistresses so that they could do "christian work" without distraction.

That's just not right. Just shows how hypocritical and twisted their system actually is!

Yes it is awful when any Church or anything for that matter tries to cover up the wrong doings. I'm not sure whether its meddling from the church or opinions of the courts that cause these people to get away with it, or a mixture of both. I guess the large Churches do have the money to pay for good lawyers, but I haven't done any research into it. If they are getting away with crimes, then yes this behaviour is disgusting esp. of an institution of religion.

And what about scientology. They try to escape the law all the time, its been documented.

http://www.scientology-lies.com/investigation.html
http://www.clambake.org/archive/CourtFiles/

In this one they got done for libel, after trying to get out of it, the courts filed against them in 1999.
"Informal estimates are that Scientology has spent 5 million pounds fighting the case. Three counter-claims brought by Scientology were dismissed with prejudice last year."
http://www.daisy.freeserve.co.uk/bonniewoods.htm

So scientology not only tries to hide illegal behaviour, but then uses its money and might to try to silence critics or anyone trying to get their money back from scientology

I can't believe your envoking such double standards.

I get called a Nazi by YOU, for providing my opinion with the evidence or sources on scientology, but it's ok for you to consistently bash christianity without linking to any evidence what-so-ever. I have seen many of your answers belittling and criticising christianity with immature glib remarks - oh I'm an atheist before you say anything. This is plain hypocrisy.

Typical logic of a scientologist, your training must be really coming along, as your communication & critical thinking skills are just dropping through the floor.

priests killed young boys...back in the spanish inquisition, the crusades, the toppling of a thousand "pagan" faiths...
oh and a lot of raping and plundering was done too.

Now after two thousand years of denying their founders worldview they are the biggest mafia-like organisation in the world and can see over such minor crimes like raping...did you know that the indexed archives in the vatican are filled with pronography to 75 % percent at least and that catholic priests always had the desrie to write explicite about what about sex was a sin and what even more than that, often writing pornography themselves ?
Hypocrisy is just another word for god.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU!!!!!!!! It's not christian whatsoever. 99% of the things Christian people do isn't Christian. My mother raised me to believe in God and left the rest to me. After immense studying of the three major religions (Islam, Judaism and Christianity), my heart told me to follow Islam, NOT TRADITION! The real problem here is that when you're a priest you can do what's natural, which is get married, get laid and have some kids. It's like they have this big TABOO on sex. I'm so glad someone out there feels the way I do. Keep it up brother!

just because a man says he is a man of god does not make it so. a monster is a monster does not mean he cant pose as an angel. This has nothing to do with a god fear christian. how the heads of churches deal with this is beyond any Christians power to change. as if your company you work for decides to change product or hire an idiot to run a business. thing is people worm their way in and corrupt the good things in life. as for being punished I watch a show not long ago where they have showed 27 priest convicted of sexual crimes. everyone pays for their crimes in time. this has nothing to do with Christan's but our justice system. churches can not keep a conviction shabby evidence is what keeps convictions slow or non existence

It's the individual who is the Christian. He makes his own choice to rape. God is who we are christians of. Your relationship is with God, not the church. A church might let priests or others by, but they will reap what they sow. God is their Judge and He says vengeance is His.They might get protected by a church,or escape punishment from the law for now, but they won't escape Gods. He doesn't approve or accept this kind of behavior. It's a sin.

These guys are not Christians, they're catholics and there's a big differance. And just beacause you're a Christian does not mean that you have a free ticket to sin. Any Christian that's true @ heart strives to be Christ like not man like.

It is not the Christian religion as a whole. This is specifically a Catholic thing and I don't understand it either. And by the way, they have been getting convicted left and right lately as well they should.
