Ok. A lot of the answers you have received by others are merely foolish talk by people who don't know what they're talking about.

Speaking in tongues is something that any Holy Spirit -filled, faith-filled, God loving Christians have an ability to do. It's a gift of God, usually as soon as you first become baptised in the Holy Spirit you are able to do this, however not everyone does it straight away. You have to have faith and patience, and ask God to help you use this gift.

Speaking in tongues is basically prayer. When someone speaks in tongues, they are praying to God, or rather the Holy Spirit is praying through the person TO God.

The Holy Spirit is speaking through you to God in a language that the person usually cannot understand. The Holy Spirit puts into words things that the human mind and heart cannot put into words. Sometimes a christian does not know what's best for them or what God wants for this person. However the Holy Spirit does, and the Holy Spirit prays these things for you in another language to God.

That's just a basic summary, an understanding Spirit -filled christian pastor may be able to better explain speaking in tongues to anyone interested.

Peace.

Don't think that this is insanity. It is a gift of the Spirit. Just know that there is nothing that you can do to prepare for it. I have never experienced it nor do I know anyone that has truly had the this gift. We know that it is possible through what it says in the bible because the Lord is the same yesterday today and forever. It must be only by the will of the Lord. I can guarantee you that if it is happening on a regular basis that it is not of God. What purpose would he have in doing that? I learned Spanish fluently in two months. That could be considered a type of gift of tongues.

Acts 5:1-10 states the point of speaking in tongues is speaking foreign languages and that in time these tongues would no longer be needed (1 Co. 13:8-10) and since "the good news of the kingdom" would be spread throughout the earth, foreign languages would no longer be needed, would they, since there would be NATIVE SPEAKERS in each language to spread the news.

You go to a revival, get the Holy Spirit a' movin', git all fired up and start jabbering nonsense like everyone else does! The "tongues" are nothing at all - I've heard it... it's a bunch of baby talk gibberish. It's an overload of "vision" and the thing that a lot of people expect if you're gettin' Holy....

1. YOU get SAVED. (Born-Again, Spiritman Recreated)
2. YOU ask the FATHER in the Name of JESUS, to FILL you with HIS HOLY SPIRIT. (Caution: do not do this is you haven't been SAVED, satan will try to slip you a FALSE one (Spirit, LOST Angel) that can cause you some trouble till you do get SAVED).
3. Believe that YOU have Recieved the HOLY SPIRIT
4. SPEAK in TONGUE's. This is the Tricky-Part---alot of Children of GOD ask the FATHER to Fill them, and HE does, but they never SPEAK in TONGUE's. They are waiting on a FEELING, then they think that the HOLY SPIRIT will take over their Vocal Cord's and Make'm Speak.
GOD does not over-ride your Free-Will. When you get Filled with the Spirit, you MIGHT feel something, and then again you might not.
5. The HOLY SPIRIT give's you the UTTERANCE.
You have to use your Free-Will and make some sound----then the HOLY SPIRIT will Lead and Guide you to FORM the WORD's from the Sound you are making. When Peter got Permission to Walk on the WATER, Peter had to decide to GET OUT OF THE BOAT, then GOD's Power held him up on the Water, till he got scarred and lost it. Hope this helps. Ditto.....
The UTTERANCE is---you make the SOUND and the HOLY SPIRIT help's you FORM the WORD's.

Speaking in tongues is an expired activity. How so? Well, the churchs that do that, don't do that within the guidelines set forth in the Bible.

I'm not sure what you mean, but the purpose of speaking in tounges in the New Testament was so that the apolstles could speak to everyone in the Roman Empire without learning all the different languages. They spoke their language and everyone else heard in their own language.

say LA LA LA LA AL BA BA BA to loosen the tongue! I have actually seen and heard people do this to bring it on.

It creates two classes of Christians-- those who have it-- those who don't.

Ever meet a Missionary who used his gift of tongues to talk to people of other races?? NOT QUITE!

Why would anyone want THE LEAST GIFT?
