I've been a camera nut for 40 years, and have all kinds. Most people overbuy on digital cameras, thinking the more megapixels, the better. The truth is , if you only want to keep pics on your computer and make standard size prints, a 1.3mp cam ( no longer avail) will look as good as a 6mp cam on the computer screen or print. However, the higher the mp's the higher the resolution. 3.2mp are almost extinct, so I'd go for a 4 or 5mp camera, these will easily be in the $100-$170 price range. With 5mp, you can blow up prints to like 16 x20 I think, which you'll never do, probably 8x10 at most. And remember the higher the megapixels, the more memory needed for each pic you take and bigger drain on batteries, which digital cams eat. So don't buy bigger than you need. My current recommendation , which I just bought for myself a few weeks ago, is a compact FE-115 Olympus...small with easy to use controls and several shooting modes as night scenes, portrait, and anti shake mode which is important. It also has a great macro and supermacro mode where you can get as close as like an inch. It's a lot of camera for the money with big easy controls for not so tiny fingers. The screen is smaller than many but high resolution for clear images. I paid $149 at circuit city and got a 512MB free memory card worth $50, so really paid only $100 for a great cam. Been very happy with the results. With this size card, I can take about 375 pics I believe in the high quality mode. But be sure to buy the rechargeable batteries for any camera you choose ,or you'll be changing AAs about every 15 minutes. P.S. Canon and Sony also make great products, so try to stick with these 3 brands.

I'm looking at cameras too if you look at it from a professional point of view you want something like Nikon or a Canon because they lead the way in Camera technology. Theses days you look at megapixels and zooms I would not get a camera with more than a 8.0 megapixels because for our every day lives you just do not need it and you do not want something zooming in on the booger from someones nose or something. You want something with a memory card that will not be scratched because I've been down that road and I've cried. As for zoom they do not make more than 4 x zooms for small cameras that cost less than 200. I would up the antie and give it an other hundred or wait till november when prices are down. A good camera takes good night pictures, most camera companys have not grasped that good luck!

There is no magic answer to this. If there was a "best" digital camera then why would there be som many different types for sale?
The best camera for you depends on what you want to do with it, how much you want to spend, personal style, etc.
Example:
If you want some simple snapshots that you will e-mail to people and never print - a cheapy camera or a cellphone is all you probably need.
If you want to have something to make prints of your friends and always have it with you one of the cute little credit-card sonys might be great for you.
If you want to take pictures of birds or sports you probably need a 6x optical zoom or better (like maybe a canon S1-IS).
If you only make 4x6 prints then 4MP is fine, if you want to make wall posters then you'll need A LOT MORE.
If you have kids, buying one that also does decent movies is a great plus.
Be careful listening to people's favorite camera and buy it on that alone (one man's treasure can be another man's trash) but it is nice to know that someone else like you likes a camera you are interested in (some cameras look great on the flyer/shelf but are not very fun to use.
If I have to put in my opinion, I would buy a camera from a manufacturer that has been in cameras (and optics) for a while -- like Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Minolta rather than one who is known for making TVs and Boom Boxes. Great optics is the key to a great camera. My personal preference is Canon.

Good brands to look at are Sony, Canon and Olympus. I think Canon is your best choice because they specialize in cameras where as Sony is high quality, but they dedicate themselves to electronics in general, I have a Sony P10 and my brother bought a Canon digital camera and the Canon captures the colors much better, so my next choice would be either a Canon or Olympus (which I heard is very good too)

I will rank camera by popularity.
1. Canon
2. Sony
3. Nikon
Both canon and Nikon takes great pictures. Canon for flexibility on controls. Nikon for lens quality. Sony has been in electronics business for quite some time and I should say they have one of the most user friendly camera.
If you are also more into using the movie mode of the camera, Canon uses AVI format, Nikon uses MOV format while Sony uses MPEG format.

Someone answered it well; what are you going to do with it? Is the most important question.
Also, ease of use is a top priority. I found the Nikon Easy pix series and Kodak cameras super easy to use and give great results, high pixel rate (resolution) and reasonable price. If you are new to cameras, get one that is easy to understand and use.

I have an Olympus SP-310 and I love it. I would definatly recommend it. It makes movies, has great, quality pictures. Mine has a 1mb card and Thats plenty more then I need. You can also edit and enchance your photos on your camera. It has different modes for different types of pictures and I find it very useful. So, overal, i'd say get the Olymnpis SP-310. =]

There's a one at walmart for $69 and it's 6.0 megapixels and 5x digital zoom. It seems pretty nice for the price. And it also has that little lcd screen to see pictures.
