I don't know what the deal is, but I believe some demon crawled into my cat's intestinal tract and died there. Walking into the bathroom where his litter box is is like walking into a wall of funk. I mean, it leaves a film on my teeth!

Anyway, are there any changes to his diet and/or his litter that will make the lessen the odor and make it more tolerable?

Has the smell always been this bad, or is it something that started recently? Sometimes, a change in the size, smell and density of a cat's...er, "stuff"...can be a sign of illness. Might want to call your vet and ask about it just to play it safe, especially if this a significant change from the norm.

I have heard that salmon cat food is the best at minimizing odor related to diet. Whatever you do, don't use perfumed cat litters as that isn't healthy for the cat's respitory system. Other suggestions of using Arm & Hammer is good as that stuff absorbs anything and everything! Change the litter box at least once a day (more if he goes a lot).

I live on a sailboat with 2 cats. There is nothing quite as nasty as the aroma of catshit!! I FINALLY found a cat litter that works to control the odor better than any other I tried. There may be others but ScoopAway works best for us. I use a very deep litter box with at least 3" of litter. I clean the box at least once a day .. and change out all the litter every 2 weeks.

I have 3 cats. I had the same problem. I use tidy cat scoop with arm & hammer cat litter deodorizer. I found an oder control thing. I cant remember the name of it, its a small net bag with some kind of rocks in it. You put it behind your litter box. I either found in in the cat supply's or by the dog shampoo and meds for pets at wal-mart. Its the best and it works. You can leave you litter box alone for a week and not smell a thing. Trust me, it works. The bag last for months and whens it doesnt work anymore your supposed to put it out in the sun for 2-4 hours and its good again for months. Hope this helps. If you decide to buy it let me know if it worked for ya.

Whoa! First off, two great deodorizers I know of are Arm and Hammer cat litter deodorizer and another sprinkle by Natures Miracle. The Arm & Hammer costs about two bucks, but it's great. The Natures Miracle is closer to ten. If you're willing to try different litters, try Feline Pine. It's ground pine that's compressed into pellets. When it gets wet it puffs up into a kind of sawdust. Great at controlling odor. Clumping litters are great also. Arm and Hammer has a good litter too. Cats can be freaked out about changes concerning the litter box, be parient. Good luck.

I'm not sure what foods might help, but as far as the litter box goes... clean it everyday- it's a pain in the butt I know, but worth getting rid of the smell. Also, I put baking soda into the pan when I change the litter. About a cups worth, seems to help control the odor a bit.

Feeding cats wet food, especially types containing fish, seems to make both their urine and fecal matter stink worse. You might try a Littermaid cat box, feeding your cat a high quality chicken based dry food, and using baking soda or a scoopable litter that contains it in the litter box. Many brands are flushable, now. Also, using high quality food which contains chicken as it's primary ingredient will improve your cat's urinary tract health, as well. It is low in ash, which causes cats to die young from urinary tract problems. If you can't afford a Littermaid cat box, use scoopable cat litter and clean the box every time your cat goes. If you use flushable litter, you won't have a smell in your house. The Littermaid, though a little expensive, is well worth your money because it takes no time and little effort to keep kitty's box clean.

Good luck.

What are you feeding him? Wet food (canned) tends to make their poop stink more than most dry foods. And cat urine is the worst !!

I can't stand the the poop when my cats have Meow Mix, either. I'm sticking with Purina.

Tidy Cats Small Spaces litter works very well. You still need to scoop out the clumps every day or so. Also every week or 10 days totally empty the litterbox and scrub it down with water / laundry detergerent. Then rinse it out. Pour a bit of bleach and water in it. Pour that out, then spritz it with distilled white vinegar. It may even help you to have two litter boxes that you can switch out while one is being sanitized.

Maybe it is diet, but have you talked to a vet? Maybe you should move the litter out of your bathroom. Also get unscented cat litter as that creates a bad smell after the cat has used. Also if you don't clean out the litter every day you should to reduce smell and it is healthier for the cat.

Try getting one of those litter boxes with a cover and a door. Cats like the privacy and it cuts down on the smell.

Also change your litter often.

I agree with the Baking soda comment. It works wonders. I have 3 cats and I use "Fresh Step:Cedar" I find that it works wonders. Cleaning your box regularly also helps. Does your cat eat wet food daily? If so you should consider adding dry food once in awhile. Wet food makes stinky poo. If you must use air fresheners, try Oust! or something that is an odor eliminator instead of a "fragrance spray". Good Luck man!
