Chow mixes can be extremely difficult to handle - your vet gave you good advice. What makes you think that his next owner will be any more loyal to him than you are? No one wants a problem dog. It's not his fault that he's defective - the fault lies with whoever let two aggressive, unruly dogs mate in the first place. It's kinder to put him to sleep than for him to go from home to home, possibly being abused or hurting someone's child. Could you live with that?

No kill shelters will just send him to a kill shelter, that is what they usually do when they have an unplaceable dog. He sounds unplaceable and he will be PTS.
Why would you think someone else wants your problem dog when there are many nice ones to adopt?
You need to either have him PTS, or learn to deal with him and take him with. He is your responsability. Find a good trainer, not one who will teach you that treats = good behavior. The owners being in charge is what will get good behavior, not treats.
He is unruly from lack of leadership and training. I am sorry, you are probably overwhelmed and I don't want to be unkind, but he is this way because of your lack of leadership and now it is your responsability to deal with it. Hire a good trainer or PTS. If you need help finding a good trainer, let me know and I will help.

There aren't many home remedies for this since the problem is usually food on the teeth/tongue. When a human has bad breath, what do you do? You brush your teeth. So, do the same thing for the dog. Brush his/her teeth and you will notice a huge difference. Unfortunately, if not trained from a young age, the dog may hate it. Stick with it though since it's good for them. Chew toys are also good for this. Kong's and anything indestructible can help with dog's teeth. When they play and chew, it actually scrapes their teeth of residue from food. You can also pick up some "Dental" treats for dogs that do the same thing. Finally, and a no brainer, is fresh water. Keep constant fresh water around for the dog so he always has clean water to drink (and subsequently rinse his teeth).

Look for chow rescue groups on the Internet. There are a lot of breed specific rescue groups around. The benefit is that they know the characteristics of that particular breed and often will find a foster home until a forever home for your pet can be found. At four years old, he is still young and should have many years ahead of him. Good luck to you both!

www.circletail.com. They are sooooo great. It's a shelter about an hour outside of Cinti. They use people in prisions to train the dogs. Those that get really well trained become assitance dogs, the rest get adopted out to homes. They are wonderful. BTW they are a no kill shelter

The problem here is that you cannot control the dog so would anyone else be able to? It also would be unusual for a veterinarian to suggest euthanasia so there probably is something really wrong here. have you tried seeing a behaviorist?
