With so many denominations and religions, how can I decide which are true and which are false?
There are many religions and denominations in the world. How is a person supposed to know which one to choose? It is certainly understandable that even a very earnest and sincere seeker after truth would be confused over the religious situation today, with hundreds of denominations, sects, and cults in Christendom alone, as well as hundreds more in other countries and cultures, and with new religious movements arising almost every day. Nevertheless, God has provided adequate instruction for us to enable us to "know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error" (I John 4:6) if we really want to do so.
There are three criteria which are especially helpful in evaluating a particular cult or movement: the teachings of its leaders concerning the Bible, concerning Christ, and concerning the way of salvation, respectively.
1. Attitude toward the Bible
The Bible claims, many hundreds of time, to be the written Word of God. The Old Testament Scriptures were accepted by Christ and the apostles as divinely inspired and completely infallible. Jesus said: "The scriptures cannot be broken" (John 10:35). With respect to the New Testament, He promised His apostles that "the Holy Ghost shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14:26), and that "the Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth" (John 16:13).
Therefore, during the first century, the apostles who had been with Christ, had witnessed His resurrection and had received these promises, gradually wrote down the Gospels and Epistles which now comprise the New Testament. These were readily received and recognized by the early Christians as inspired Scriptures. The apostles claimed that these writings were divinely inspired and authoritative, and true Christians have always accepted them as such.
Finally, the last of the apostles, John the Beloved, near the end of the first century, was enabled to look prophetically into the future ages and to write down the last of the true Scriptures, the book of Revelation. This completed God's written words, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life" (Revelation 22:18, 19).
These last words of Christ's apostles give us a most important rule. The Scriptures are fully inspired, even to the very words, and those who would add to them or take away from them are, to the extent they do so, false teachers.
In general, cultists have been guilty of "adding to" the Scriptures, claiming either that the writings of their own founders were divinely inspired or that the interpretations of their leaders were uniquely necessary and authoritative. Modernists and liberals, on the other hand, have been guilty of the even more serious error of "taking away from" Scripture, culling out or allegorizing those portions which they decide are unscientific or unreasonable to modern man. The true teacher, however, will accept all the Scriptures, and only the Scriptures, as the infallible Word of God.
2. Attitude toward Christ
A true Christian teacher will gladly accept and proclaim Jesus Christ as He is, true God and true man. "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is the antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son" (I John 2:22). "For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist" (II John 7). "There shall be false teachers among you, who privately shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought (that is, 'redeemed') them: (II Peter 2:1).
Error concerning the person of Christ can take either the form of the ancient Gnostic heresy, which denied His true humanity, or that of the modern Agnostic heresy, which denies His true deity. The latter considers Him to be a great man and great religious teacher and leader, but rejects His virgin birth, His sinless life, His substitutionary atonement, and His bodily resurrection and ascension. Any cult or denomination or religious movement which does not clearly and forcefully proclaim the Lord Jesus Christ both as the perfect Son of man and the only begotten Son of God, "the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty' (Revelation 1:8) is false, and should be rejected.
3. Attitude toward Salvation
The gospel of Christ is "the power of God unto salvation, to everyone that believeth" (Romans 1:16). The word "gospel" means "good news," not "good advice." It does not tell us what we must do and not do in order to earn salvation, but rather what Christ has done to provide salvation as a free gift. "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9).
Every other religion under the sun, whether pseudo-Christian or non-Christian, panders to man's pride by teaching him there is something he can do to earn, or to help in earning, his own salvation. Only true Biblical Christianity recognizes man as he really is, utterly lost in sin, destined for eternal separation from God. The gospel, "by which you are saved," is the glorious new that "Christ died for our sin" (I Corinthians 15:1,3), and that we can be saved by grace, through personal faith in Christ, plus nothing else whatever! Any religion which teaches otherwise is, to that extent, false. Paul said, "If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that you have received, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:9). One who is truly saved by God's grace in Christ will, of course, then seek to follow Christ and His Word in all things, not to earn salvation, but in love and gratitude for His glorious gift of cleansing and everlasting life.

I don't believe in Creationism. Where the hell did they get the idea that the Bible can be used like a scientific tool, explaining how God created the universe? One acquiantance actually anwered, when asked about fossil age and dinosaurs and the data supporting evolution, "God made it look like there was evolution and made it look like the fossils were really old to test our faith". That's pathetic. The Bible doesnt back that up. These people can't see anything other than black or white nothing in between. Would God be reduced to a lesser-god if Evolution were true? Definitely, No. Evolution is nothing but a law of nature and as such would still need "someone" to make it a law. And that is God! People forget that Genesis wasn't written for modern men--men of science--but men of "simple" minds even their vocabulary was limited. The Genesis wasn't written to teach science. It was meant to make known that God created everything we have around us and we are His creation. How, scientifically how, it doesnt' say. Nothing in Genesis opposes Genetics or Evolution.
I got a question for creationists: Adam named every creature. Does this mean Adam had a longer name-list than what we have now? I'm interested because until now, we still discover new creatures from the deep.
The Bible was declared inspired and did not claim any inspiration at all. The Church preceded the Bible. In fact, the Church is the mother of the Bible. She was the one who decided which books out of several hundreds belong to the Canon of the Bible. If you are really interested, go find some books on the history of the Bible.

Evolution is creation. The Truth is in the spirit. Have faith and find yourself. Christian is not a religion, Christ is a spirit that came to open our eyes to the knowledge of the spiritual world. From the spirit, GOD, the One or the true Ãon was a perfect being. GOD emanated into two, and from those emanated more, to where the creation god (creator of materials) came and made the physical/matter world. Look at science and the stars. The Bible was written by fallible men, unlike the universe.
Gnosticism is the TRUTH.

The Bible is a loose collection of history/stories collected over time by MEN. The Bible was NOT inspired by the "Creator" but by events/happenings at various times and in various places. Religion didn't inspire the book--it interperts it and causes wars over it's writings. Not only that there isn't a "Creator". Think of creation as being a process and despite it having to start somewhere it started with a PROCESS...there is NO CREATOR. PEACE!

There is no empirical evidence whatsoever to support creationism. it is simply held be people who so firmly believe that if the bible does not contain the most advanced scientific data possible then their faith is worthless.
Galileo’s claim the earth revolved around the sun was debated for years during his lifetime. The religious fanatics claimed his instruments were inaccurate, or his calculations were wrong, or his observations were mistaken, or his measurements were incorrect or his conclusions were invalid or that he was a godless infidel.
And here you are today doing the same thing with science that your fanatical forefathers did.
Science is self correcting. Faith has a conflict of interest, because every fact must conform to some predefined conclusion, and any fact that does not must immediately be rejected for one of the above reasons.
It is a dishonesty so obvious that you must actually pretend not to see it.
Religion often breeds a blind conformity. follower are told what to believe and so they are susceptible to simply following blindly
REMEMBER:
There are many, many believers that support evolution. There are no non-believers who accept creationism.

That is were science and faith have to diverge. Some creation stories are patently false (like those that say the earth is on the back of a giant turtle or nestled in a giant tree) but others are very similar now we need to look at the rest of the tenants of faith and the work of the faithful. I think the God of the Bible is the one that fits that bill the best.

There is no evidence to support "creationism".
Religion is a matter of faith, and not a matter of facts. It is by its nature, concerned about spirituality, free will, and the believe in something based on something other than evidence. There is not, nor will there every be any evidence that proves that god exists, or that she does not exist.
Creationism is an attempt by fundamentalist cristians to try and figure out how we could be here if they interpret the bible in a literal way. Fundamentalist christians make up about 5% of all christians, and about .01% of all religious people.
Science is the focus on gathering facts, evidence and data to explain why our world is the way that it is. It is not about spirituality, or faith. It does not try to say that god exists, or does not exist. It does not compete, or exclude religion or god in explaining things the way that it does.
Large numbers of people believe both. They see the data and facts gathered, and the theories explaining them, and understand that evolution is the process that we humans came to be here. Then they look at it from their spirituality, and feel that way in which god "created" us is through evolution. SInce this is a blending of sicence and religion, it relies, like all religion, on a
willingness to have faith, since there can be no way to prove it.

if you look at stuff in the bible you can tell that most events and "holidays" were copied from other religions to make it an easier transition from one religion to the next.
Example: Easter, rebirthing of christ and yet it happens to fall on the time of year that the "Pagans" celebrated they fritilty holiday!! Easter bunny and easter eggs?? Bunnies represent having lots of kids and eggs are for the females which are the ones that give birth!
Alot of the bible was rewritten during the Roman Empire in a way to unite the empire into one becuase Christianity was growing fast. THe government used it to enforce their laws and beliefs onto others!

So"... if creationism is a reality, and it seems most probable..."
Ackkkk...
So, the height of your intellectual achievement is to decide that the myths, superstitions and fairy tales of a bunch of ignorant, wandering, Bronze Age goat herders represents some kind of universal TRUTH? Whan all of modern science tells us that it just ain't so?
Well. Hang on to those thoughts. Based upon the results of the last two elections, you might get to grow up to be President some day.

There is not one thing in The Holy Bible to have been proven wrong or inaccurate and it has been through some people that really wanted to prove nothing less than it was a fake. As we progress in time there is more and more archaeological findings that are proving that what is in the Bible is accurate.

Religion is not determined by God.. is a thing manufactured by man... if one follows the history of most religions, they will find a common thread... somewhere in the past there has been an origination of those things we are to do.. strictly for spiritual growth... most religions of today present only half of what they are instructed to teach.. A bit of research into the past history of the different religions, may enlighten you
