When the brain stops functioning, animals lose all conscious awareness.

Because it is the soul that feels the joy and sadness. The brain simply responds to what the soul feels and interprets it as pain or pleasure.

According to atheists, you wouldn't feel any pain or joy. According to those who believe in an afterlife, such as Heaven or Hell, it's an emotional pain or joy that would be experienced. According to those who believe in an afterlife, emotional feelings are still present, because the soul consists of such senses. It is the soul, not the body, that is said to enter Heaven or Hell.

Our bodies are made of flesh, yet we are spirits that only
live in these bodies here on this earth. Our bodies will perish
but our souls will not, as long as we give our life to God.
Jesus said", and fear not them which kill the body, but are
not able to kill the soul": " but rather fear him which is able to
destroy both soul and body in hell". God does exist. There
IS a judgement after this life.
