I think it is okay to let your child go sockless as long as it is not causing him any physical harm. It may seem odd, but sometimes we need to think outside the box, and think about our motives and reasoning for certain behaviors. Just because we have done certain things a certain way all of our lives, does not make it right, or another way wrong.

I don't know how old your son is but it may be that wearing socks with his shoes make his feet hurt. My daughter has unusually sensitive feet and has to have shoes bigger and certain socks. She wears mules most of the time. Or anything that does not require socks. She owns a store full of high heels too. I about tore my hair out before she was able to express to me why she wouldn't wear socks....some kids are just that way. Good luck. Nana

Hi, I have three kids of my own, but no, I never had that problem with them because I told them the consequences. We used to live in the North of Massachusetts and when I was a child we were very poor. Many times I had to walk to school in broken shoes and no socks. My feet used to get frozen that many times I cry. My teachers used to cover my feet with paper, and many times brought socks, but home we were so many that they will take my socks away. Not until much older, our life came much easier, then we started been more flexible, but I started to like having my shoes without socks. I got used to the cold, and never again bother myself in wearing socks. But as today, I am paying the consequence. I had to move to Florida, cause my feet were always in pain, I started suffering arthritis in my feet. I am still so Young, I'm only 43. Now is to late, I should had ware socks when I was a kid.
So I hope you son can read this story, this is no lie, please boy, use your socks, they might not feel fun, but they will save your feet in the the long run.

My son went through a phase like that. I was afraid he'd get blisters on his feet if he didn't wear socks with his shoes, but he was so insistant that I decided it wasn't a battle worth fighting. I let him stop wearing socks and didn't nag him about it at all. After a couple weeks he got over his no-sock phase and started wearing them again, and has worn them ever since with no fuss. Sometimes I think kids do stuff like this just to test their limits and see what they can and can't get away with, or to try to assert their independance.

Maybe the socks hurt his feet? There are certain types of socks that will cause pain if worn all day. Some never notice this but I do and several people I know.look at where the socks are sewn across the toe or at the very end of the sock. The ones sewn across the toe area do hurt!

I have a hard time with my kids just wearing shoes. But I tell them that they have to keep their feet covered even in shoes, because socks protect the toes and feet from nasty things like spiders that crawl into shoes, or mice droppings or even from the cold which can make them sick. Plus in a lot of places you are required to wear shoes. I wouldn't worry too much about the socks in the summer time. Its too hot to wear them then.

Your kid won't DIE from not wearing socks. My daughter hates socks. How important is it to you? Personally, I don't care. She wears socks when she feels like it. Although, I do let her pick out her own socks at the store to encourage the wearing.

you know my son hated wearing socks as well until i took the time to figure out why - you know socks have that line in them at the toes my son can not stand for that to be against his skin so i try to buy tube socks or the ones with no seams see if you can get him to tell why that might be it

My kid hates socks too...so do I. My wife insists that we're both wrong...so you're right. But we still don't wear socks (very often.)
I like the first answer...I used to put a sock on my cat's head once in a while when I was a kid...it's very funny. But now that I'm a parent, I have to chastise my kids when THEY try to do it to our present fleet of cats.

I say make that one of those things you just make a deal with him on....get a thermometer that will tell you what the temp is outside, and if it gets to a certain temp he has to wear socks. He can get what he wants, you can get what you want, and if he's not old enough yet, you've taught him numbers and/or how to read a thermometer.
