I think civil/structural engineers are the happiest. They get to work with things that can be touched, see and feel - such as concrete, wood and steel. Best of all, they get to see their designed buildings, bridges, retaining walls, etc. built and these serve civilization economically for a long, long time.

Mechanical Engineers - there is an endless number of challenges for mechanical engineers in their jobs. It is very rewarding and mentally challenging. It is not the highest paying discipline, but it is the most diversified and least likely to get you laid off in a tough economy.

I have worked for 25 years as a Chemical Engineer.

Those who are competent, understand what they are doing and have the freedom to do it with little interference.
The "why" I think is obvious.
