I've had a female Torti for five years now and she is so violent at times. When she was a year old, I got her a play mate because I was at work all the time and didn't want her to be alone. She has never liked him after all this time and they are about a year apart. When she was younger, I had her spayed and a hernia was surgically removed from her stomach. However, she can't stand being held, cannot stand being picked up and can't stand it when he tries to play with her. She gets aggrevated and anxious often. She bites her own hair off to where her legs and behind are hairless. I have been kind and very patient with her, not scolding her physically nor being mean to her in any way. There have been some violent attacks against me. Her howls are ear hurting and awful! There are times she is loving, but only to me. She hates other people (except my ex).
Is there anything I can do to calm her down? I have tried everything I can think of!

I have a 3-year-old female Tortoiseshell who is very affectionate and sociable (when she wants to be). Tortis are traditionally very territorial and independent animals. Females in this breed in particular are considered "divas" and can be stand-offish at times. Mine only wants to be adored on her time. Otherwise, I will get the swipe and bite, to which I just walk away.

In your case, however, from what it sounds like, your kitty has had some traumatic experiences (surgery, introduction of another cat) and she is extremely stressed. Cats stress very easily, and you've done the right thing so far by not scolding her or being mean to her.

First, you should schedule an appointment with her vet to see if there aren't any physical complications that are causing her to behave this way. In the meantime, you should create a spot in your home where she can feel secure. Use a room that has little activity where her litterbox, food, her favorite toys and a bed that is enclosed. Be sure to leave the door shut, making sure she isn't exposed to the other cat.

Try not to force affection on her during this time and don't try to pet her, but at least you can talk to her in a soft, high voice and reassure her until the vet sees her to give you a diagnosis.

Some cats will always be anti-social, but this sounds a little more than that. I hope that everything works out and your vet is able to help.

I have a female calico who we also had problems with, not as bad as what you're having, but she still scratched all of us and hated all the cats we had. We had to get her declawed because she scratched us so much, but she's better now. She's about 10 and i think that time just made her sane and miss people. Unfortunately we never figured out what was wrong with our cat either and we didn't abuse her or anything either. It might just be the personalilty of the cat.

If your cat did not have much human contact as a young kitten, then she may never be a good pet... try giving her some catnip... some cats dig it, some don't, also she needs a high place to sit and rest, all cats enjoy a high perch where they can keep watch on their surroundings... it keeps them calm.

A friend of mine had that problem with chewing his own fur off his body......until the vet put him on mild tranquilizers.....

This might help:

She's not evil. She has some inner trouble and should be taken to a vet for stress relief.
