I never started because I've seen how they've ruined the health of my parents.

Foolishly, when I began college, at 17, away from home for the first time and on my own, I wanted to be 'hip'. All the kids were smoking something - so I figured cigarettes would put me right up there with the cool. Everybody was smoking "Kools", so I did too. Soon, they became to strong for me and I switched to Virginia Slims, then Mores. I smoked randomly - first thing in the morning and after dinner - all of course - during out study session and card playing. Eventually, I began a career singing and smoking really hurt my throat and voice - so I gave it up. I wasn't a heavy smoker, so it was not hard for me to quit. I won't say that I developed asthma as a result of my smoking, but I will say that being surrounded all my life with parents who smoked, then going to college and inhaling smoke, might have had something to do with my upper respiratory issues. I am now 53 and have not had a cigarette in 20 years or more.

I never started because I've seen the effects of smoking on loved ones. My step-day who appeared healthy, wasn't overweight, had a fantastic career and had it all died at the early age of 37 due to the effects of smoking. My b/f started in his early twenties while in the military, but he stopped a few times and then started back. Now in his late twenties he is in the process of quitting and just started taking Zyban about a week ago and tomorrow he is supposed to go cold turkey per his physician and I'm sure he'll be fine. He is stopping because it's a nasty habit and since he is a PA he sees the effects smoking has on his patients on a daily basis, which sometimes is death.
