The United States has 50 states. But many other countries are divided into states:

Mexico has 32 states.
India has 28 states and 7 union territories.
Many other countries have provinces.

There are seven continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. There were 13 colonies when the U.S. was originally formed: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. While there are 50 states in the U.S., there are 192 countries (independent states) in the world. I won't list them here, but you can find them at the second link below.
