It was the english, irish, germans, spanish, french, native american indians, although we had germans(hessians) on our side as well and native american indians we lost beacuse it took weeks to sail troops over the atlantic so we had to surrender but us and canadians got you back when we kicked your butt in 1812 and dont say we didnt because canada wouldnt be apart of the commonwealth because america wanted canada

I don't know of any Americans with a knowledge of history that believe this. Lafayette was the best Admiral the US had and he was French!!!
The War of 1812 (in Britain, the American War of 1812 to 1815), was fought between the United States and the British Empire from 1812 to 1815, on land in North America and at sea. The war ended as a stalemate, with no territory changing hands. The United States, which declared war and attacked British colonies and shipping first, ended the war without gaining any territory; however, the British ceased the sovereignty violations, to which the United States had objected, two days prior to the war.
I wouldn't say anyone kicked anyone's butt although it does appear that the US gained a huge amount of respect for battling the British Regulars to a standstill. I fyou are talking about the Canadian Militias that belies your lack of knowledge on the subject. Most historians believe the Canadian militias were largely ineffective and it was the British Officers which marshalled their forces.
At sea the British got thrashed in most battles with the US. The USS Essex destroyed $3,000,000 worth of the British whaling fleet before being captured by two British frigates off South America.
Sounds like the whole thing was basically a stalemate with the US gaining significant prestige in the world, although not much land, from the war.

Well mostly because Americans like to think that everyone involved in the war became American. Also, they were fighting the English, so I really doubt that the English helped, although the French did and you failed to list them. Second most Americans couldn't pass a 9th grade History class, so they don't feel that history is that important, which is why they make many of the same mistakes. As for those who would care to bash my answer, I'm American. Also, as for you kicking our butts, who cares. If we didn't come and save your ***, you'd be speaking German right now. Now for the honestly part, does it really matter? If your point was to show that Americans are arrogant, hello... have you seen the world lately? Wars have been waged since the beginning of time, and most of them have very little point to them other than power and control. Whether it be land, people, freedoms, oil, or other precious commodities. Your question only lends itself to a pissing contest. Sure America needed help - doesn't everyone? Arguing that Americans are arrogant, is one, pointless, and two doesn't change the outcome. So if your point is to have an American admit that it's shear arrogance... then voila there you go. However, if you want to bring up all the battles that you've won, then perhaps you might want to get your history book out and look at all the ones you've lost first. Lest you forget that the Sun does set on the British empire now.

Generally, the War of 1812 is considered to be a kind of second American War for Independence. The British were drafting Americans into their navy and generally behaving like America was still part of England, so we went to war. And yes, the British did torch the White House and kill a lot of Americans, but in the end the Treaty of Ghent returned everything that was taken in the war to the previous owner, and returned everything to a pre-war status quo. America gained a lot of international respect and legitimacy for being able, as a new nation a few decades old, to fight to a stalemate the most powerful nation in the world.

The same reason no one talks about the fact that there were many British, french and German troops in Iraq in the 1990's. Or we don't talk about the other groups in other wars with the Romans. Or no Japanese history book admits they were responsible for Pearl Harbor. Because history is written by the winners, not those that stood next to them.

Why do people make such blanket statements about Americans? I for one knew that we were losing badly until Franklin was able to convince the French to help us out. Probably people say "americans beat the british" out of ignorance of the history or because they were the two main players in the war.

There is no war now. I 'm European & dont't harbour a grudge for nobody. So why can't you forget & forgive? Instead your intellegence is focused on hate. You must address this problem, otherwise we may have another "jumped up power frenzied little dictator like you on our hands.
Elitists never surive. There will always be someone bigger & bolder. The Raj? etc.

First, Americans who know their history know that they got a lot of help from other nations...way back in the fight for independence....so, I'm not sure which Americans you are referring to in your question...
And second, all the Americans I know, myself included, don't spend a lot of time boasting about, much less giving much thought to, who beat who way back then.
Third, I think we're all on friendly terms now.
