i think of it as more like a parent who feels they have to step back in order for thier children to grow (hence, letting us make the right decisions to stop suffering instead of him). plus, people would always make the decisions they thought god wanted if they knew he existed. this way it is all up to us

Please everyone ask yourselves this question then you will see how hypocritical we all are
can i see the wind? does it exist?
can i see thunder? does it exist?
can i see love? does it exist?
have i seen mars/jupiter(personally)?do they exist?
have i seen parasites? do they exist?
if a mother warns her daughter about her boyfriend and the girl refuses to listen because being with her boyfriend feels so right and she leaves home so that she no longer hears her mum does that mean the mum no longer exist
if per chance the boyfriend was actually bad news is it now the mums fault?
if she now has a baby in an environment where there is no love and the child is abused and grows up thinking there is no God is it still the mums fault?
God made us because he loves us but he told us to stay close to him - well we (the whole world) just decide to ignore him and things get worse then we blame him just like the stupid daughter above. Unfortunately we are all in the world together so some ones bad deed may actually affect an innocent person - like the girl above her disobedience and wrong judgement had grave repercussions on her child.
so when you ask if there is a God or not, think about why people are afraid to die and why all the positive charges of the protons in an atomic nucleus dont explode after all they tell us that positive charges repel!

Psalm 14:1 "The fool has siad in his heart, 'There is no God."
Romans 1:19-20 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so they they are without excuse
God is not in hiding, His glory can be seen all around in His creation. I don't have to shut my eyes to pretend He really does exist, the evidence is everywhere, for:
'The heaven are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship. Day and night they keep on telling about God.' Psa 19:1-2
Suffering exists in the world because of sin. The only way that God could truly stop all suffering was if man had no free-will whatsoever, and no longer had the power to sin. I guess then we would all be robots.
I guess I forgot to answer the first part of your question as to where He is. He is on His throne, sustaining creation, and providing breath & life even to those who do not believe He exists.

Hmm. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to see it, does it make a sound? I can't see the air that I breathe, does that mean that it does not exist? Everything must balance. You can't have good without bad. You can't have happiness without sadness. You can't have life without death. The Chinese had the belief of the Yin and the Yang, which means everything must balance. What if everyone stayed healthy and we all lived forever? How long would it take for the earth to become over populated? Would there not be suffering if people didn't have enough food to eat or a place to stay?
With that said here is my take on your question. It was not so long ago when I questioned the existence of God. There was a time in my life where I substituted women, fast cars and the desire of money for God. These three things in a sense became my God. I lived my life the way I wanted to live my life. Recklessly. Without any regard for the word of God. However, after a while that grew old and I reached a point in my life where I wasn't finding the happiness and joys in life that I seeked. Something in my life was missing and that something was God. To make a long story short. I accepted my mother's invitation to attend bible study one evening and my life hasn't been the same. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal saviour and I can't even begin to tell you how much happier and enriched my life has become. First and foremost the Lord has blessed me with a great wife whom I met as a result of her missionary work for her church, a great job (pay and conditions), a great family and I am currently in great health. Since I made the decision to dedicate my life to God the quality of my life has improved. God reveals himself to me everyday. He reveals himself to everyone, unfortunately very few of us our open minded enough to realize it. Is it just a coincidence that my life got better after I got saved? Me personally, I find that God is like the wind. I may not be able to phsyically see Him, but I sure can feel Him. Peace.

Who said God was male? He/She/It, as I see it, is just the personification of extreme good, and a primitive explanation of how the world and everything exists. Likewise, I see the Devil as a personification of extreme evil --- he/she/it 'explains' why bad things happen.
I'm not sure whether God exists, or what He/She/It actually is, but I do know that if we all thought for humanity's sake, rather than for God's sake, we would be a lot more better off. Religious groups, each claiming to be "God's chosen people" are causing so much bad things in the world, e.g. Israeli-Palestinian conflict: the Israelis swiped Arab land, claiming that it was there birthright; now both sides are doing the whole like for like thing with missiles, weaponry and kidnapping. Does the Torah/Old Testament give exact measurements for 'Canaan'? I don't think so... they should be happy with what they get and not steal... come on, it's like Italy coming over to the UK and claiming Kent to be their ancestral homeland just because it says so in the Sybilline books (prophetic books of ancient Rome).
I do apologise if I've offended Jewish sentiments, but if you read it calmly, you can see what I'm getting at. War is pointless and people, not necessarily Jews, are using it as a means of claiming to be God's children. Space is very, very big, and we are so very small in the wider picture, so how can we fight in the name of someone/thing that we have not physically met and have no conclusive proof that He/She/It actually exists.

Have you ever seen air?? Have you ever SEEN pain??? No, you just feel it. You can not see God but you can feel him by just looking around you. What do think , this earth and the moon and the sun and all those stars are revloving and hanging on their own? Ofcourse not. There must be some one or some force who does all this . And how can you say God didn't come and prove it's existance? Lets say there is a king. Do you expect him to come to you and tell you he is the king?? NO. He will send his men or servents to you. Similarly God sent so many prophets and messangers to tell people that he exists.
As far as our suffering is concerned, whatever we suffer is the result of our bad deeds. So we should pray for his forgiveness.

Hi mate, everyone has the right to question religon and it is human to have doubts. Thing is, it comes down to faith, some people have it, some don't. God did show himself, in the human shape of Jesus Christ, God can't show himself as he really is because we can only see God after we die, then we will understand because through death you become all-knowing as God is, but everything has to come under God, because he his above all creation. I know this that just over 2000 years ago, a man named Jesus Christ, who claimed to be the Messiah (chosen-one) and the Son of God, just like you are a son to your father. He was to change the way people thought and approach things, a Christian culture, if you like and the shock waves of this powerfull influence he had on the world, has been felt through the centuries. Now, Jesus commandment's was this, Love thy neighbour as thyself, do unto others as you would have them do unto you and Love each other but people are'nt really listening to him, because look at the world and the state its in, you cant half Love something, you eitheir Love something or somone or you don't, so I'm asking you, to Love Christ and God and try to believe in them, if you can't then don't worry, just try to live a good life and try to be a better person, you can make a big difference, just by doing a good deed for someone every day, okay, take care my friend.

God has given us free will, and it is US who causes suffering, not He. Also, there is the presence of evil in the world and we must choose - God can't make us choose Him.
And where is God? Look outside at teh flowers that push up from teh earth, and turn faces upward to soak in sunshine and rain. Look at the blue skies and cotton clouds, and the green trees raching for it. Look at the wonder of a newborn baby, or the beauty of a hawk overhead. Smell the rose's sweet essence and taste the pureness of a drop of honey.
Inhale the aroma of rain after a storm, and smell the grass when you cut it. Watch a storm and then see the rainbow. Open your eyes and your heart, and you will notice God.

If you will never be really sure He doesn't exist, then why say there is no God. If the thought lingers in your mind and bothers you that maybe there is a God out there, then why neglect it. There are multiple eye-witness accounts that Jesus lived, died on the cross for our sins, and was resurrected, which have been recorded. I don't know why God does exactly what He does, but He has a purpose for it all. ^_^

God has to live up to peoples expectations of real life on Earth. Therefore, most people are conditioned to expect an absent god of no miracles, who leaves Earth to us. Be no good if you got told god was some 200 foot high chicken who turned kids into toothpaste - 'cause you just don't see that happening! So we tell kids that god is mysterious and invisible and ineffable, that way, real life can be interpreted in any way you care as being inherently godly.

look around u. at all the nature and EVERYTHING. where'd it come from? did it just appear? uh...no? God created EVERYTHING! how else would u explain it? i mean seriously. i'm just going to believe that is was God unless u have a better reason.
God just doesn't show himself to us because we're too evil and crap like that. God does not dwell in unholy places. but he'll come when the time is right. the wicked will die and the righteous will live. but just because u can't see him doesn't mean he duzn't exist.
My bro got this one e-mail that's kinda funny and stuff but it's cool.
A class was sitting in school one day and the teacher was teaching the kids about evolution. She wanted to ask a little boy, tommy, a few questions.
TEACHER: Tommy, look outside. Do u see the trees?
TOMMY: yes
TEACHER: do you see the grass?
TOMMY: yess
TEACHER: Now, tommy, walk outside and tell me if u see the sky.
Tommy went outside for a while, then returned,
TEACHER: Tommy, did u see the sky?
TOMMY: Yes
TEACHER: and did u see God up there?
TOMMY: no...
TEACHER: That's because he duz not exhist. You cannot see God because He is not there.
Then a little girl raised her hand and wanted to ask Tommy a few questions. the teacher agrees.
GIRL: tommy do u see the grass outside?
TOMMY: yess
GIRL: Do u see teh trees?
TOMMY: Yess!!!
GIRL: tommy, do u see the teacher?
TOMMY: yes
GIRL: Do u see her brain?
TOMMY: no...
GIRL: then, according to what she just taught us in school today, it possibly may not even exhist.
