Many people use the VIN number to record the history of the car, becaus eit is unique for each care.

Most cars have it on the dashboard fo the car, on the drivers side, so that it can be read through the winshield.

It can be decoded to tell you some things about the car. The first digit , if it is 1 through 4 means made in the US, 2 is canada, 3 is Mexico, E is England, G is Germany, J is Japan, K is Korea, Z is Italy.

The second digit tells you who made the car, A is Audi, B is BMW and so on. Se the reference below for more details.

As for what you can find by VIN, you can use it with your state to find out who owns the car, through the department of motor vehicles in most states.

CarFAX is a company that gets you the history of any accidents or other work done on the vehicle, using the VIN.

The VIN (vehicle id number) is a seventeen character code assigned to every automobile manufactured in the world.
The VIN, if you have the information to read it, will give you the name of the car's manufacturer, the vehicle type, model, year and place of manufacture.
The VIN can also give you information like the attributes of the vehicle, (4, 6 or 8 cylinders) and other information necessary for a repair shop to get the exact replacement part .

You can use a VIN to run a carfax search at

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

if you pry it off, you'll damage the dash panel. unless you are going to attempt to sell the shell of the car or you are going to take the car to a junkyard that will write down the VIN for smog credit purposes, which will have the VIN recorded as destroyed...then just leave it on there and let the new owner deal with it. if you want to sell the shell with title then remove the vin. but the best way to do this is to use a drill on low speed and slowly eat out the center of the rivets flush with the vin plate and then pull it off. good luck to the new owner getting hold of the proper 6 pointed rivets though as they are illegal to sell lol.

if you run the vin on carfax it will tell you the last known owner and where its registered, wether its been in an accident or not . . .the proble, with the accident report is if i go wreck my truck and fix it myself, its never registered, so carfax wouldnt tell you that, but if it was taken to a shop and fixed and a police report was filed than it woudl show up . . .also the vin will tell you what came with the car originally, but you need a code book or whatever its called, like v might mean it had a 350 in it . . . .thats just an example i dont knwo what the v means
