cd burning is writing your files to a cd by some programs like Nero or Windows Xp writer
but ripping a cd is copying your audio files from cd to your computer
for example windows media player rip your audio cd and save them as wma files in your hard disk

ripping a CD is taking a song or data off a cd as everyone said, it's just a new term that was put out. burning a cd is putting data or music on, it permantly puts it on , a laser burns a dent in a cd so lasers can know there is something on it
