I am 100% pro-life, and I'm wondering what you other pro-life people feel about something (no offense to the pro-choice people, but I want to hear from people who have similar beliefs as me) It's concerning birth control pills. I took them for years, up until I wanted to have my first child. When my cycle resumed after weaning my daughter, I talked to my OB avout getting back on the pill. He is Catholic, and knowing my beliefs on abortion told me that although the pill works by stopping ovulation, it doesn't always work that way, and as a secondary defense it sustains the uterus lining in such a way that if fertilization did occur, the fertilized egg would not implant. I guess this is one reason Catholics dont believe in the pill. What are your opinions about this? Do you consider this to be a very early abortion? Please opinions by pro-life people only.

I just want to add that I have a wonderful OB and he was in no way trying to push his religion on me. He just wanted to make sure that my husband and me were making an informed choice.

I am very prolife....and i believe you are not pregnant untill the fertilized egg implants itself into the wall of the uterus. So if birth control prevents this, then I don't consider it abortion.

I'm catholic as well (baptized catholic, been through CCD, confirmed, etc. but haven't been to Mass in many years. I think I've been excommunicated, lol).

I have an IUD. The one I have isn't hormonal though...it's copper. It doesn't "kill" anything...honestly, scientists/researchers aren't sure exactly why it works, but it deters the sperm from meeting the egg. I do still ovulated. On the rare occasion where it doesn't work (super sperm? LOL) most of those pregnancies are carried to full term, and healthy, normal babies are delivered (assuming the woman finds out early on and has the IUD removed).

I dont think taking the pill is considered abortion. I think it's abortion when a fertilized egg which has implanted itself in the uterus is killed. A sperm is a sperm, an egg is an egg. Neither of them (separately) would grow to be a baby. The same holds true for ectopic pregnancies...that can never grow to be a baby. It can get only so big before it ruptures the woman's fallopian tube and dies. The woman could die, too.

So no...taking the pill isn't abortion in my book.

Well , the pill , has side effects. Condoms have no side effect and remove most of the possibilities of std's. As for abortions , I think the only abortions to be done is on the doctors that do them , late term for the doctors. All doctors that kill children have no morals, nor do the woman that seek them. Only aloud abortion should be if it the mother and child life are endanger. and the baby should be removed via c section , if it is lager enough to survive then that is nice. If not at least they tried. As for all others carried to term , if you do not want the baby up it up for adoption ! There are people out there who will raise that baby and love it . And people who do put it up for adoption should also be fixed, so they can not do it again. If they latter in life decide they want children they can adopt a baby . Or pay to have them selves fixed back . well just my thoughts.

I am pro-life. I went to a Catholic school where I was told because I was on the pill I would go to hell even though I was on it for medical purposes (my periods were too heavy that had I not taken them, I'd lose too much blood & need transfusions or I'd die).
As for the uterus lining & such things. Yes, that is how the pill works (in both the ways you described). I would talk to your priest if you feel confused. Also, the other things that would play in is whether you're married or not, etc. But, they recommend that you use natural family planning. However, I agree with you questioning this. If you are supposed to enjoy engaging in sex with your lover, but don't wish to bring a child into the world without being prepared for it, I think I would rather do the pill & plan for it. Just so you know, I am Roman Catholic & pro-life as well.
This is interesting & if you'd ever like to talk further feel free to contact me. =) Good luck with your little one & future little ones.

Birth control pills trick your body into thinking that it's pregnant. If you were pregnant already, any eggs that got released and managed to be fertilized would not implant- you can't get MORE pregnant (unless you're a cat, but that's a different story.)
So... my husband and I, while being very pro-life, are also thankful for the pill. God will give us the children we should have, birth control notwithstanding. Haven't you heard of the people who get pregnant while using contraception? Better to take the pill than take chances with your health and that of your children.

It works the same way Plan B works. If your looking for a birth control talk to your Dr about IUDs it works in a slightly different way. As for abortion no I feel abortion is knowingly terminating a pregnancy you didn't consciously decide "Oops the egg got fertilized think I'll make a hostile uterus wall now!"

As I understand it (and I'm no scientist), sometimes a fertilized egg will not adhere to the uterine wall anyway, regardless of whether birth control is used. In that case, the pill is not causing anything to happen that does not already naturally occur. If you still consider this abortion, you're left to wrestle with the fact that these so-called abortions are naturally occuring phenomena.

You should do this research on your own. Many priests say that you are having an early abortion by using types of birth control. This is because they dont believe in it. Dont take health advice from someone who isnt a dr. Do your own research. I had this same dilema after having my daughter, and talked to my dr. He gave me tons of info to read before I made a choice.

As far as why catholics dont like birth control, it isnt about abortion. It is because sex should not be used for recreation. Only procreation. If you using b/c then you not trying to make a baby. They dont even like condoms and that has nothing to do with an egg being fertilized.

Here is some info, I know pro-lifers dont like planned parenthood, but this is unbiased factual info about birth control.

Hope this helps.

I am a pro-life Catholic, a nurse and mother, and yes, I agree completely with your OB. That's why I used the sympto-thermal method of child spacing.
