The Westin Hotel on Los Robles in Pasadena is where I would stay. Pasadena is a beautiful, safe city which you can still walk in and from the Westin you are within walking distance to many great restaurants. If I were there for a month, I would check out the Huntington Library and gardens, hike Eaton Canyon, take a walk in Lacy Park, cruise San Marino, take a drive up in the San Gabriel mountains, visit Big Bear Lake, window shop down Rodeo Drive, check out what is new at Universal Studios, go to the beach at Malibu, and go horseback riding in the Hollwood Hills on the midnight ride.

UGGH! Obviously you haven't ever had to spend much time in LA. The thought of having to stay there a whole month bums me out.

The Beverly Hilton and spend all your time on Redondo Drive.
