First off, recognize that this is what it is.

Then, take a deep breath - hold it for a count of five, and try to slowly let it out.

Repeat this twice more.

It will give you something to focus on, and it will let the feeling subside a little bit.

Before the next one happens, do a little exercise to give you some tools.

Choose one thing or person who you enjoy being around. It can be your pet, your parent, best friend, a hero - whoever, or whatever.

Focus on whatever you choose and imagine a scene where you are with that thing or person and are happy, relaxed and calm.

Now do it again and remember how you are feeling.

When the next panic situation arises, bring that memory back and focus on it while you breathe deeply and slowly.

You can train your body to respond to these exercizes. You will gain control, and the panic-y feelings will start to subside - like the tide rolling out.

Use this every time, because it takes practice to make it work!

Hang in there!

I have never suffered with panic attacks, but I have friends who have. This is what they did because they grew tired of the heavy medication involved. Get involved in support groups and therapy. You don't say how serious your attacks are, but have a complete physical examination. If you have really bad attacks, it may not be to your advantage to 'just stop", There are things you can do for yourself when you feel on coming on - talk to yourself, try to remain calm, etc. but first - talk to your doctor. Any good physician will want to help you rid yourself of this disorder 'naturally' so that you don't remain on medication. Good luck to you - and if it's any encouragement- my friends are no longer on pills, but are managing their attacks because they know their bodies and what happens that brings the attacks on. Now they have control - and that's where you want to be.

i have really bad anxiety, i take effexor and xanax to help with it but before i went on the meds i did a lot of meditation. if you are having a panic attack, just breathe in and out very steadily and think of something really calm and relaxing, like a day at the beach. the other thing that helps (it sounds kind of weird) but if you are having a panic attack, shake your hand back and forth really fast (as if you were packing a tin). the quick motions help control your breathing and take your thoughts to something other than whatever triggered your attack.

doing excercise or yoga regularly can also help.

Prayer.... Try to relax and remember what is truly important. Don't stress out for no reason and keep in mind that being stressed out doesn't change or help anything. Good luck. =)

When you have a panic attack, think about something you like to do.
