Yes. Dogs actually have two coats, under and course. Regular grooming, brushing with a fine brush or a curry comb (horses) removes the under hair which is the hair that sheds. You need to do this on a regular basis, and you will be astonished at the amount of hair that you collect. I always kid my clients and tell them that I put the "extra" dog in the waste basket today. It also distributes the oils in the coat and skin. Brushing is a great way to bond with your pet. I don't have alot of extra time, and this gives us a little time for 1 on 1.

Short haired dogs like Labs will shed a lot all year round. Make sure you are feeding a good quality food that is "nutritionally complete." I like Nutro - it has no "by products" and is reasonably priced. Have your vet check for intestinal worms - they can cause excessive shedding. Don't bathe him too often - no more than once every six months unless he's rolled in something. When you do, use cool water. Warm or hot water baths make them shed more. Also, get shedding blade from the pet store - it's a mini version of the kind they use on horses. That will take out a lot of the loose hair. Other than that, get a Dyson vacuum!

1. High quality diet, check the ingedients, no junk, no unidentifible meat sources like poulty, meat meal etc. Not a food that lists the same thing 3 times in the first 5 ingedients like: corn, corn meal, corn hulls
2. Regular bathes
3. Regular grooming
4. And if you are really wanting to get ride of coat fast use baby oil, rub well so that it gets down to the skin, let it stay on the dog for a half hour or so and then wash well. This works very well but keep in mind with a lab that has a coat meant to repell water this will be very difficult to get out once you put in it and should only be used as a last resort.

You can buy a product called Shed Stop...it is a liquid you put on thier food that provides essential fatty acids and oils that help reduce dry skin and thus shedding also you can just buy cod liver oil or pure virgin olive oil and put it on your dogs food but the shed stop has a combination of fish oils and plant oils so it is better. Also the pet store sells several other brands of this type of stuff there is one called Dr. Maggies as well, they all work pretty good and reduce the amount of shedding, it does take several weeks to take effect though.... Good luck hope this helps!!

I feel for you, we have two furry ones, and best thing, is to brush them. And also make sure your using the right kinds of brushes/combs. I do not know much about a labs hair, but having a collie we had to get shedding type tool, looks like a rack. For the life of me can not remember what it is called. If the shedding continues, you might want to ask your vet, sometimes switching their food helps. We also have one of our dogs on liquid supplement for their coat and skin, if her skin gets dry she tends to shed more then usual. Good Luck!

A little bit of linatine, or flax seed oil in the food. Its normal for a lab to shed, they have two coats, so brush him outside every day.
