Pain under left ribcage?

A friend of mine has had a pain in her side just under the ribcage for a few months now. It used to be a dull pain and now it's a sharp, stabbing pain and can be felt from her back too. What could it be. She needs to see a doc, I know but she won't.

it could be a kidney stone comeing from the back to the front i have had them and they hurt as long as it isnt comeing from the right side
