Did you get spankings as a child? Often? Are you male or female?

How old are you? I wonder if that impacts if we spank our own children or not. I used to get by butt torn up occasionally with a belt but I oppose spanking.

Different strokes for different folks. I got spanked but I decided not to have kids so I don't have to worry about it either way. You chose the burden of kids you chose the path to raise them simple as that. If you chose not to spank and you are wrong then it falls squarely on your shoulders for there success or failure either way it is still your Onus and the child either suffers or succeeds based upon your decisions. Male by the way but I don't see the point of sex mattering one way or the other.

I am a 29-yo female, not yet a parent. I was spanked as a child. I wouldn't say the spankings occurred often, but sometimes my butt was bared, as well as other things to increase the pain. I plan on spanking my children, but only for willful disobedience, fully clothed, and never with the goal of maximizing pain, or after the age of 8.

I agree. I got spanked all the time when I was a child, but as I got older, the spankings decreased. It is probably because as children get older, you can punish them with more effective ways other than spanking--"No phone time" or "No parties". I don't think spanking a child damages their self-esteem or has any sort of bad impact on them. However, it is a bit barbaric for me, and if I have to spank my children, I do it with my hand, and not a belt or any device of any kind.

I'm a 28 year old female, and my mother occasionally spanked me. She did it when the pain of a spanking was a safer reminder than the pain of whatever dangerous thing I'd been doing (like playing in the street or playing with matches). Generally, though, she arranged things so I wouldn't need to be spanked- none of this dragging your toddler out shopping during nap time and then spanking them 'cause they're tired and cranky. She made sure I was well fed and rested before we ran errands, and set up the house so I could explore pretty freely without her having to say, "put that down or I'll give you a spanking".

My mom's philosophy, and mine now, is that it's better to manage your child and his/her environment so you don't feel the need to spank them... but better a sore bottom than a maimed kid/ dead kid/ burned-down house/ etc.

I'm 29 years old, female. A mother of 3 daughters. And they are a splitting image of me when I was growing up...except my oldest is like me when I was younger and my middle child is just like I was when I was a teen. My youngest is still a little one so I can't really go there. Any how the answer to that question is, No I have never been spanked. Except once. And spankings do not result in who our parents are or were. It results in how we feel about spanking our children. My dad has spanked all of my other sisters, but not my younger sister or I...except that one time. I haven't ever spanked my kids when they were younger, but I feel it was because I was afraid to be reported for abuse. I now spank my kids when they get out of hand, but that's hardly ever. I never do it to get their attention, its to let them know that I believe they have done wrong. But I never ever do it out of anger!

Depends on when, why and how hard. I was "disciplined" overzealously as a child and as a general rule I do not believe in physical punishment. HOWEVER, there are some children who respond to a SWAT on the butt to get their attention and let them know you are NOT happy with the danger they are putting themselves in. A spanking does not have to be hard to be effective. (By the way, I am a 44 year old mother of 5) It is a tool much the same as a lecture (my kids would rather be beat than get a lecture any day of the week and twice on tuesday)

i was spanked once for calling my dad a dork at the park. not with a belt just his hand. i think using a belt isn't spanking, i believe it is beating. i do spank my son but i don't really think it is spanking. i just tap his butt not very hard just enough to get his attention and let him know he shouldn't be doing what he is doing. but i only do it if he doesn't listen when i say no a hundred times.

I was spanked on time when I was 8 by my babysitter and my dad threat ed to kill her lol!! but my parents never spanked me, i am a 20 year old female and i have a 18 month old son, that gets his butt or hand spanked but I barley have to do it because he listen pretty well

I was spanked, but not too often and I turned out fine. My son has gotten a couple of pops on the butt, but usually when he does something that could get him hurt...like playing with the fan, or pushing things down the steps after being told not to.
