You have to be careful what you take regarding meds for nasal congestion because you can get a rebound effect, meaning once you stop it can get worse.
However, Afrin works the best regarding severe congestion without fulling your body full of a Sudafed.

The other thing you can do is breathe steam with Vick's, it helps calm the swelling and irritation in your nasal passages, and you can also do saline rinses.
I will be thinking of you, allergies suck.
Can you take Benadryl, or Claritan or something that is an antihistamine?

As a person that use to suffer from severe allergies and took 11 years worth of allergy shots and several medication I finally found what really works and I found it works for lots of people. Flonase (nasal spray). I can breath all night. I no longer sneeze constantly and my nose isn't runny. Your doctor could give you a sample to see if it works. I've recommended this to several people and they are happy with it. The directions said it would take 1 week for it to take effect, I felt better in 3 days.

To get rid nasal congestion, you should first get rid of your allergies. Try taking antihistamine meds but this will make you a bit drowsy.

Sit in a tub with water that is as hot as you can tolerate it & continuosly pour water over your head.Doing that should help loosen some of the congestion.Spit out drainage if it goes to your throat.Blow your nose as well.It works for me.I do this almost everyday since my husbandhas to sleep w/the ac on every night. Also i recommend taking Excedrin sinus oills as well,so you won't stay w/ a sinus head ache all day.Be Blessed! There are topical nasal sprays such as Afrin and anti inflammatory type sprays. Allergy testing and desensitization is recommended.

Hot steam from whatever source: A hot bath, a hot shower, or a hot drink. There've been times when that was the *only* thing that helped me.
