The most common advice is to "write about what you know." Keep a diary. Write a blog. Try short stories. The only way to actually accomplish your goal is to write, write, write!

Have you aver written a college paper. A long one? Go to the library and you will find books in the English section on how to rorganize your notes on recipe cards. Write more than you think you'll need. Color code with those colored dots that people use for yard sales. Use red for the setting. blue for the bibliography, yellow for certain subjects in the story. Keep cards with you all the time, and when you think of something jot it down on the card and keep it filed in the color coded section it belongs in. Even write things down that you don't think you'll use, it may lead to an interesting or connective part of the collection of cards.
Then at some point, sit on the floor and sort the cards in each pile and number them in the sequence that you think you'll be putting it all together. Ya gotta have a system.

i would suggest you pick something interesting. Maybe something that you did in your past or make up a very interesting story. Most people enjoy reading and they DO judge a book by its cover. So you can make a colorful cover or a design and a catchy title. That would make it a great book . :)
