There should be only two answers. To serve and protect!
Those seem to be the main elements missing from the various forces around the country these days.
Don't ever forget that the higher the level of leadership the lower the level of servitude required. No one seems to remember that basic concept anymore upon which our once greater country was founded. Ever wonder why crime gets worse and worse? More prisons, and jails being built and crime never goes away, only gets worse. Everyone seems to have forgotten that the term "public service" means exactly that!!!!!
We are slowly getting back to our formen glory with the help of God as he takes back our country from those who would spoil it freely.

2) intimidating people i don't like and making them 'uncomfortable' by pulling them over on a very busy street so that everyone can see what's going on.
3) police car chases.
4) beating a suspect out of his mind when the camera on my swat car is off or out of sight.
5) getting chick's phone numbers in exchange for not writing a $300 ticket
6) walking into a middle eastern food store and ordering a couple of falafels and some sodas and walking out without paying
7) planting drugs on innocent suspects to make it seem they were trying to sell drugs
8) shooting suspects to death and then planting a stolen gun next to him with his fingerprints all over the gun
9)flashing my cop badge and getting what i want whenever i want with whoever i want anytime i want
10) taking drug money from the dealers i bust and reporting back to the station that there was nothing there.
11) pulling drug dealers over and going through their pockets and taking all their money, and searching under the car seats and taking their guns for my own personal use.

"To protect and to serve", to enforce the laws, to help to keep the peace, to help keep our communities safe. Some people though go into law enforcement for selfish reasons. Some people like to control other people and what better career to go into for someone like that? Some people just like being involved with criminal activity, and being on the side of the law or pretending to be on the side of the law is better than being blatantly against the law. I think MOST people though go into law enforcement with the best of intentions, and I give them all so much respect as their jobs are difficult and dangerous ones. If it was not for them, can you imagine how terrible things would be?

Police officers generally get good benefits, police departments need cops not matter what the economy is doing, you get paid a decent wage, you can advance in your career, you get to help people, it's a job with a fair amount of prestige, you will always find work after you retire because people like to hire former police officers, no workday is the same as any other, it's exciting at times, it can be fun at times, you will see and do things that most people never get a chance to, and you will make friends you will keep for the rest of your life.
That's just a few of the reasons why it is good to take the job of a police officer. The job takes complete dedication, especially early on when you are in the Police Academy and in Field Training. Leave any and all predjudices you have about people behing as you are about to learn that no race holds the patent on crime, drugs, or any other social malfeasance. You will find people of all races who are good, kind folks who are just trying to live their lives honestly and decently, and it is the same twenty to thirty knuckleheads in every neighborhood who ruin it for everyone else.
The job is very dangerous as you can get hurt in all kinds of ways. Most people think that cops only die in shootouts. Many cops die in car accidents, from heart attacks on the job, falling off roof tops, stabbings, assaults, and other assorted accidents and misdeeds which are too numerous to list here.
Alcoholism and suicide are epedemic amongst police departments across the country. Many larger departments have counseling for suicidal cops, and for alcoholic officers. Yet, in many departments, it is still considered taboo amongst the rank and file to seek professional help for psychological problems, which is something many departments are trying to overcome.
Many cops cheat on their wives/husbands, gamble way too much, become hostile towards other people, suffer from depression, or overwork themselves, taking time away from their families (leading to job burnout). Others, become withdrawn on the job and avoid contact with the public as much as they can. In my former department, we used to say that an officer would have his or her "blinders on".
You run the risk of getting civilan complaints, and/or sued for using force, even when justified. You can contract diseases from the folks you come in contact with. You will be thrust into very alarming, dangerous, and tragic situations several times a tour. You will have to stay physically fit in order to chase people on foot, often several times a week, even if you are assigned to a patrol vehicle. You will have to use force to arrest suspects, or assist in the arresting of several suspects many times a week. You will have to become a "referee" in domestic disputes, which are by far the worst situations an officer has to deal with. You will see dead bodies in varying stages of decompsition, bodies which were mutilated, bullet ridden, and yes, bodies of children who suffered terribly before being murdered. None of this ever leaves you.
Still, if you feel that you can be honest, dedicated, level headed, loyal to your spouse, and willing to put up with a tremendous amount of abuse, see awful things, help people in times of tragedy, and still show up for work everyday, then this job is for you. Good luck!
