there are many grades of parquet flooring. The most basic comes in 12x12 tiles that you just glue down and looks like this http://www.canfloor.com/pics/parquet2.jpg
This type of floor costs about as much as a good quality carpet.
But depending on what you're willing to spend, parquet can get as expensive and as fancy as your heart desires. Here's another example http://www.barefootfloor.com/rvkcatalog/pageimages/dept-parquet2.jpg
So, basically it's up to you.

Is Parquet Flooring Expensive

It is about twice the price of an excellent nylon carpeting with highest grade padding. It will not have to be replaced, so take that into consideration. The carpet I am having installed this week has a 20 yr stain-guard warranty/best quality pad on it, and it is half the price of parquet flooring.
Also, take into consideration that you will probably use area rugs on parquet, and if you have expensive tastes it will add an even greater price difference.
Money was not the reason I decided against parquet. Without nice area rugs, it does not have the same look of "warmth" as carpet.
Have fun and Good Luck !

Yes....it is defintely more expensive than wood. Looks really nice, but it is EXPENSIVE! and I disagree with "Sponge".....you don't have to buy expensive area rugs...I have hardwood "NOT PARQUET"......I love it and I don't have EXPENSIVE area rugs.....they are moderately priced. I love the hardwood and it looks great! For an area that gets alot of traffic.....I would defintely go with hardwood. As far as looks.....you can really express yourself with hardwood (parquet) and area rugs. Hardwood floor are not cold, by the way either! Tile on the other hand....that's a different story. Now bedrooms....I would go with carpet. But, in answer to questions as far as hardwood over parquet....PAREQUET is beautiful, but defintely more expensive.
