Up. I don't clean my toilets enough so I want to touch any part of it as little as possible.

I've lived with several women in my time. The first experience was when I was just out of college and my domestic partner would "flip her lid" if the rim were left up. I was a bit surprised at first when I asked what the big deal was and was told that, "well if I go to the bathroom at night and it's dark I hate to sit down and find porcelain. Whoa! I thought that was a really strange thing because I would never assume the toilet seat to be in any position other than what my eyes told me before making use of it! So I thought, you know, if you really think of it, the most appropriate thing to do would be to close the lid and the cover when you are finished with your business. Just like you would close almost any household fixture when you're done.
Ever since then that's what I've insisted as the way to "do business" when it comes to the topic!

In my home we always keep the lid down when the toilet is not in use. We do that mainly to keep the smell in the toilet and not all around the room but also, because of the stupid design of the toilet in our home, when we flush the toilet drops tend to fly all over the place, so instead of getting them on the seat and the floor, we rather keep the lid down when flushing. The third reason is that where we're from it is considered polite to put the lid down after use and not leave the toilet open.

I almost always keep the lid up. Since I never sit on the toilet to do other things, then I have no need to have the lid down. Besides, that lid will get in the way if I ever need to sit on the uncovered toilet quickly.

I keep the lid down, because there are young children, a dog, and a cat in the house. The children might drop something in the toilet, and the dog and cat might drink out of it, so it is better to keep it down.

Down. Keeps things, people and children from falling into an unclean environment. Also is much nicer to look at than the inside of a toilet.

Down, it is gross to leave it up. We have cats, sometimes they jump on the toilet seat, I've seen them miss and fall in when the lid gets left up.

lid is up and seat is down - ready for use. Only time lid is down is to keep kitty from falling in.
