The old testament is the story of the early Hebrew tribes of Judea; it contains their Creation story, their laws, and a history of their exploits, wars, kings, etc. The new testament is an account of the life of jesus (4 versions) whom christians believe is the messiah prophecied in the old testament. Jewish people believe in the OT only, while christians believe in both. Christians decided to combine them into what we now call the bible. The OT was a written version of stories passed down by word of mouth for hundreds of years. Christians believe that the NT supercedes the OT in many areas, but they still revere the OT and believe it is useful since it covers a lot of stuff the NT does not. This view varies from person to person, however. There's lots of disagreement which is why there are so many denominations of christianity. In reality they are 2 very different books that shouldn't really be together especially since the jews, who wrote the 1st book, don't accept the 2nd as true. The bible isn't copyrighted, so you can add whatever you want to it and publish your own version if you want. That's basically what the early christians did. The followers of the OT worship Jehovah, the god of the hebrews, while christians worship jesus, or use god and jesus interchangably. It's really 2 different religions.

In 367 CE, a Bishop, Athanasius, put together a lists of 27 books, letters, gospels etc...that we now recognize as the New Testament. The NT was written in Greek and Aramaic approx 40 years to 96 years AFTER Jesus' time. There are many gospels that have been 'lost' or debated over authenticity.
The OT was written before Jesus (approx. 1500-400 b.c.e.). This was supposedly inspired by god's (YHWH) holy spirit. The books, letters, songs etc... have many different authors and many stories parallel that of other religions. It is about the Messiah's coming, the Annointed One and documents the lineage from which he was to come from.
Depending on what christian religion your talking about, some do still use the OT and some don't. The ones that don't are the ones that believe that since Jesus died for our sins, there is no need to abide by the Law, the covenant, the ten+ commandments. There are others that refuse to have anything Jewish in christianity.
The christians that still embrace or 'obey' the OT pick and chose, so to speak, what they want.

The old testament at least the Prophets was written through the Inspiration of The Holy Spirit, our New Testament tells us. Jesus came to fulfill or Finish the old Covenant that told them God would send a Messiah . and God did so that ended that Covenant, Jesus gave us a New and Better one, Paul taught it and tried to explain it to the Hebrews Read the Book of Hebrews, now the Old Law is obsolete . Jesus set us free from it and established a new and better one.

The Old Testament is full of parables, and laws written before Christ. There are many great examples of how to live, and also some on how not to. The OT laws, were what was practiced during that time, and the stories are of such a time, before Christ. There is also prophecy about the coming of Christ.
The New Testament, is mostly about Christ, and Revelations, is about the end of the World. The birth and death of Christ, ended some of the OT laws and traditions, as the prophecy was fulfilled with him.
ALL of the Bible was written by man, inspired by God. Genesis was not written at the time of Genesis, but rather years later, inspired to a man, by God.

The New Testament was never intended to replace the Old Testament. It was intended as a fulfillment of God's promises to Abraham. Jesus did not come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it. The Old Testament is the beginning and the New Testament is the end.

The old testament was written before Jesus, and the new testament afterwards. The new testament is mostly about Jesus, and the God of the old testament is a whole lot meaner.

God never changed between the Old and New Testaments. And I would seriously recommend getting your answers from scripture rather than from Yahoo Answers. Read Romans 6-9 and the book of Hebrews, and you'll be good to go. Seriously.

The Jewish canon is an same because the Protestant previous testomony, although the books are prepared somewhat otherwise. The Catholic previous testomony is the equivalent of the Septuagint, it quite is a Greek textual content. The Septuagint contains countless books and parts of books that were not conventional into the Jewish canon because they both were not written in Hebrew or the unique Hebrew textual content were lost. fuzzibunny, the asker needs to make certain about the completed Tanakh, not merely the Torah.

Adam is number one, and Abraham is number twenty in the genealogy of Jesus.
Matt.1:1-17; From Abraham to David there are 14 generations, from David to Babylon captivity where Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel are writing their books, [ and only God knows where the rest of them are since the promised land is desolate], is also 14 generations to Daniel's prophecy of the first coming of Messiah, Dan.9:24-27; and the second coming to reign 1000 years.
So it is 606 years to Jesus birth in Roman Empire and 14 generations. Heb.2:9.14.16; This is very important. 1Cor.15:22-28; He does away with Satan and death by being killed as a man. So we have come from Lost in Eden to the Savior of the world in the N.T. Satan will have 6,130 years from Eden to the reign of Christ, we are 6,072 now.

I don't think you are serious. O/T id prior to Christ's birth and his story. New Testament is about is life on earth and after.
We do obey the old testament but like the ten commandments, it is hard to do...actually impossible. If we could obey all the commands of the old testament then we wouldn't need Jesus to save us. email me if you want.
The whole bible was "god breathed" we say.
