We know two things about God that helps us better understand this question:
1. God IS love. Notice, it isn't God loves. God IS love. It's who he is.
Unfortunately, we tend to think of love as a mushy gushy feeling. And, while the truth is, love can have that feeling; and love can also be a sexual emotion or attraction, love also does what is right.
WE do not see the entire picture. We only see things from our vantage point. Take, for example, Israel and the Egyptian army. In Psalm 136 verse 10, it states, "To him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, His love endures forever...." verse 14-15, "and brought Israel through the midst of it, His love endures forever, but, swept Pharaoh and his army away, His love endures forever"
Here we see, "His love endures forever", and, his love is a great thing, if you were an Israelite, but, a bad thing, if you were an Egyptian.
But, Egypt; Pharaoh in particular, brought this on himself, and all Egypt. He was mistreating Israel, and, when God said, "Let my people God", Pharaoh said, "No". So, when push comes to shove, guess who wins?
2. God does what is right. Because God is the creator, and he is outside he sees what we do not. He knows what is best. We see the bad, and think, "Where is God?" He is there, and sees and does intervene-- without interferring with free will.
For example, with World War 2; people ask "Where was God?" Well, quite frankly, he was using America to stop Hitler.
It is for this reason, God punishes even to the tenth generation. Because HE knows what havoc would occur, if the lineage would continue.
And, as a side-note. All it takes from a person who is under that curse, is repentence. God will not punish one unwarranted.
Also, in Jeremiah, God does say, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future".
God wants what is best for us. We tend to get in there and screw things up. Sometimes to the point even God cannot change things.
We ask, "Why doesn't life come with a manual?" But, we reject the manual, and use excuses like, "It's not really from God", "With so many religions, who can be sure the Bible is the really the right one?"; "I don't understand it".
The truth of the matter is, even if it is not really from God; the principles work.
The truth of the matter is, people who ask about all the religions, haven't reasearched or joined any of them.
The truth is, people who say they don't understand it, don't read it.And, they don't ask God to explain it.

Yes, the god of the bible is a vain, vindictive creature that demands to be worshiped in a proscribed manner and if you don't, he will sent you to the eternal fires of Hell. It is unfortunate that Humanity has been saddled with such a psychologically disturbed Creator, but what can you do. This God of ours also metes out punishment in arbitrary fashion, turning a good woman into a pillar of salt for just looking over her shoulder, while allowing an evil man to live long enough to kill 30+ million people during WWII. So, in answer to your question, Why does God take revenge on children? .............He is nuts.

Hey Sir or Miss!

It is not God who takes revenge. God would NEVER take revenge! Never!
Did you ever hear, God is love? God is truth?
How can love take revenge? Revenge is a human fraility, not a gods one. God is love, so much love, that it is truly infinity.
But he believes in you, and he lets you your free will. This is God!
So the thing is, if free will is missused, than there will be problems ahead, but not by God (he helps you out instead), but the law of "giving" and "receiving"- as you will seed, so you will reap... everything returns to you, be shure,- every gentle word, or every unharmony.. it somedays will come back to you.
but, sadly to tell,- it is true, that if you missuse your will (by knowing or unknowing), it may lead into problems, that will be passed on generations (also the law of giving and receiving),- when your family gives good seeds, good fruits will return,- if they have a serious missuse of power (do wrong things, so to say) , serious problems will be passed on (children KNOW unconcious what went wrong, and they take the burdon for solving it on their shoulder- this can lead to a life, seemingly of failure). But it has nothing to do with God. God is grace and helps us out....
So be shure, because know : giving and receiving: counts for EVERYTHING one hundert percent effective. If the state does good , people in it will earn good....
And so on and on.
But God is LOVE, nothing to do with revenge or jealousy or other human traits...
Be shure, Be aware, Be alert.
Control every thought of you, for it is the foundation of you and your experiences.

Love

I think that means if you commit a sin, the consequences could fall on your children. Think of the things we do with our lives that is sin and how are children and even grandchildren can be affected by it.

That's another reason we all need God's guidance and direction on how to avoid sin. For the sake of our kids and future generations.

Well what happens is that he is warning of potential for Generational Curse but pretty much what happens is one chooses to cave into such.

For instance a couple of Great Grandfathers were Alcoholics and so were Dad's Parents and the patterns still repeat.

Grandma on Mom's side was only one of her Siblings to not become an Alcoholic (not counting her Siblings that died as kids) and my Mom was only one of her siblings to not become one either not counting Miscarried Sibling).

As far as me and my Sister I don't even Drink but my Sister wound up an Alcoholic.

I don't think so. I believe in karma where, basically, what you send out into the world comes back to you times three. I don't think your children will suffer at the hands of the god (or goddess) for what you do.

That doesn't mean your actions won't have a long lasting effect on them.

Depending on your interpretation of the Bible, it may not be revenge, it may be the fulfillment of a promise. It also says that if you are faithful in your prayers that he will bless you unto the third generation.

No, karma does. Thoughts take form and memories do also. Be careful what you leave around or behind. Positive energy draws positive things to you and your kind. Negative works the same way.

According to the Bible, OH YEAH!!! If you wanna buy in on some of this, be prepared to buy it all. There is no such thing as "ala carte" in the Bible. You know, "I believe this, but I don't believe that" kinda stuff. Sorry, but it's your Bible, spelled out in black and white (and some red, too. Depends on the edition)...
