Dogs are very very smart and know a lot more than we give them credit for. My dog knows if I'm going to go out without her versus taking her with me, she will get excited even though I don't do anything different in getting ready, when she knows that we are going out together. Dogs can sense all kinds of things, when women are about to go into labor (I had a friend who's dog followed her the entire day before she had her baby), they can detect seizures and new research is showing that they are even accurate in detecting lung cancer. Dogs are way more advanced in ways that we don't even know about.

He's your dog! If you've had him since he was a puppy he's attuned to your moods, plus dogs have an incredible sense of smell. Science has yet to develop machines for stuff that their noses can discern.
Did you know there are dogs that can smell a cancerous tumor?
Yeah, your pup is yours and besides the physiological differences/advantages that dogs have they are pack animals. It sounds like you are real close "hug him for as long as i want." He picks up on cues that you give whether you know you're giving them or not.

It's amazing isn't it? My dogs also know when I'm physically hurt. I just had major surgery, and when I got home, I showed them the incisions...they sniffed them, and they know to be more gentle with me. BTW, cats are the same...just not as nurturing about it. Animals do read body language and emotions and eye messages in order to interact with their kind. Dogs cross over with humans because we are their pack, their alpha leader.

Dogs are very sensitive to mood and body language. But their sense of smell is really remarkable. I think we give off a different odor when we are sad or unhappy. We can't smell it but they can, and respond.

Dogs are very tuned in to their humans because of the strong bonnd we have with them. They know us better than we know ourselves sometimes. That is why a dog is such a wonderful pet.
