Yes your entire criminal history is keep on what is called the NCIC data base, each state uses it ( but often have thier own state name for the system) It will show to a public search any conviction you have ever had. To the police it will show any arrest no matter if you were found not guilty.

Now most likely this company only did a background from one of those online fee companies that do limited search, normally just for your state.

But if they had used a national search from the police department it would have shown up.

Yes, and it goes back more than a quarter of a century. I pled guilty in CA and more than 25 years later the gun dealer in DE got a reply from the NCIC.

I don't know if this will work, but ask an attorney about expunging the record.

I do know that it was hard to get my own information. I had to be fingerprinted twice, once for the Feds and once for the state of DE.

It depends on how much research they do. If I am right, most landlords and businesses look only at the state they are in. That does not mean that you can check no on a job application because depending on the job you are doing, they can search the federal data base where you should be.

Well lets put it this way, most don't care about your pass because look at all the illegals from Mexico that they employ. What kind of background check do they do on them - NONE!!!Those criminals could have done any and everything.
