maybe i'm over analysing this but is an after work drink less of a date than an evening drink? if it's after work with someone I work with then how can I make it seem clear that it's social rather than work related?

Either way it's not work related unless you specify you're having a meeting at the bar. Anything after work, at any time, is social. Are looking for a date with a coworker or just being friendly? Either way, ask them ahead of time, that you'd like to hang out with them at a later date. Whether it's a drink or a meal or a movie. Good luck.

After work is more casual - its a good way of getting to know someone and testing the water without the pressure of a Date with a capital 'D!'

If it goes really well then you can always go grab a bite to eat together... then make another (proper) date ... :)

i would say that a drink after work is more casual just try and keep the topic of conversation off work, maybe suggest getting something to eat after having a few drinks.
