I've downloaded "Adobe Flash Player 9 Active X" & "Adobe Shockwave Player" without any change to my ability (or lack of) to open these two file types. What would you recommend?

Thank you for your responses. The FLV player works just fine.

go to www.macromedia.com. Flv I think is a flash file not a movie, but like a saved flash document. SWF files are also fixed by going to www.macromedia.com. Download the macromedia player and plugin to your browser. then try open the files in internet explorer (firefox, opera, netscape).

Did you try opening the Shockwave Flash object file in Firefox browser provided you have Flashgot extension installed.
If you don't, first download and install Firefox browser (go to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/)

Then after you have installed it, click on Tools-->Extensions menu, and it will pop-up a dialog box showing which extensions are installed. There's a link in the bottom right corner of that box which says "Get More Extensions"...click it and you'll land on Mozilla's extensions page, there under Top Extensions category click FlashGot link and install it.

Also, download Flashplayer from Adobe and install it.

To open the Shockwave file, right-click it and open with Firefox, hopefully it will work.

For the FLV file, go to the following link and download the FLV player:

Or Google FLV Player, and the above site shows up as the first link.

BTW, FLV player plays the file in its own window... so u don't need a browser for it.

Hope this helps and good luck!
