Normally cats have anywhere from 2 to 7 kittens. I don't think its abnormal for them to just have one...but you might want to get the mom checked out by the vet to make sure there isn't another kitten stuck in there...

Yes, they can have only one kitten. It's not necessarily abnormal but certainly uncommon. Young mothers and older cats are more likely to have small litters. If the cat has previously been having normal size litters (4 is average) and suddenly has only one, something could be wrong.

the number of kittens a cat has depends on the size of the cat, how many litters it has had in the past, and how many kittens her mother had. my cat is about 9 months old. she is really tiny and only had two kittens. it was her first litter but her mother had 6 or 7 litters. most of the time her mother had 5 or 6 kittens at a time though.

If it is her first time giving birth, it could be normal. Is the kitten unusually large? You may need to take her to the vet to make sure she isn't carrying more kittens that could possible be stillborn.
It does happen that cats give birth to one kitten. Usually they birth about 3-5. I've seen one give birth to six, which is rare and sometimes they don't all make it. So one kitten, if that is all she has is good for her (and you!) and will probably be very healthy.

I've had cats as long as i can remember I'm almost 40 so that's a long time to have cats.... litters have ranged from one ( a few times with young mothers) to 11 ( which was quite a hand full) the size of the litter varies from cat to cat and from breed to breed.. in my experience i have found that the 2nd 3rd and so on litters tend to be larger than the first

Are you sure there was only one? Mother cats have a fine feeling for the survival rate of their kittens and may abandon them or eat the leftover when still-born.
