He had no manners or he had a busy job or he did not care much about the date or he had to constantly get a message on how to talk to you like--advice from his friends and then to let them know how you two were doing. Maybe on of those??
I would just tell him to turn it off or go home where he could speak to them without any interruption and then you could also focus on more important things. I hope he paid for dinner and that you had something good out of the evening--but if not--then you can at least have this funny memory and a story to tell your friends. Cool.

He doesn't seem as though he was interested in being on the date. He's too involved in other things to pay attention to you. You deserve attention from the guy on a date rather than his friends getting all the attention. If he can't take the time to go on a date with you without taking the time to answer all the distruptions, he isn't worth your time.

Sorry, but can I answer? I'm a guy. I went out on a date once with a woman that did the same thing. I can understand it if she had children with a sitter or something, or needed it for emergency. But she kept answering it, going outside to chat, texting, ect....I excused myself by saying I was going to the rest-room, went and payed for my meal, called her a cab on the way to my truck, and left her there. She called me the next day and was FURIOUS, but I said "hold on a moment, I have a call I have to take". ....I think she got the idea.

He is immature. If you go out with him again the first time his phone rings ask him to turn it off for the remainder of the date. If he doesn't it means he is putting other things and people before you. He is a Jerk.

If a guy was text messaging someone else when I was with him I would think that he wasn't interested. Maybe he was just trying to show how "popular" he is or something, but it was still immature and tacky to text while on a date!

Don't know his age, but maybe he's the shy type, insecure, not good at conversation, or dating, etc. and this was his way of being side-tracked to avoid confrontation. Just a suggestion.

The first date should be your last. If he's like this on a first date, imagine how he'll take you for granted when you actually know each other.

He wasn't interested in you or that phone would be off. If he were interested in you his undivided attention would be on you the whole time.
