Both have their advantages as well as disadvantages. In a joint family, the work can be divided amongst all the family members, you don't have to worry about children growing up in an isolated environment, there are people whom you can talk to about your problems, and who depending on their experience can offer you solution and guidance. Also, if some members stay home and others go to work, then you don't have to worry about being too tired to cook food after you get back from work, also if you wanna go out, you can leave ur kids with other members of the family, no worry about finding a babysitter...

Now for the disadvantages... you have to curtail your independence, make a lot of adjustments and go along with the majority decisions, and at times take care of other members the way they take care of you...

So, all said and done, both situations have good and bad points, its up to an individual how they make the best out of the prevailing circumstances.

From a personal viewpoint, I like joint families better as I grew up in one and enjoyed every moment of it. :-)
