The best kind to get is the kind you will actually look after and can afford to feed. Big dogs = big food bills. Little dogs = little food bills.

If you have loads of time, energy and a place to exercises and train them, get a boarder collier. They are really, really, really smart.

Otherwise, get a book on breeds. If you can afford it, get the breed that matches your temperament. If you can't afford the mega bucks for a pure-bred, make a list of the breeds that you like and make lots of trips to the local humane society until you find the perfect dog. You might find a mutt that has some of each of the breeds you're interested in.

Some humane societies will keep your request on file and let you know when the right dog comes in. My pooch is a rescued dog & we were 2nd in line for him.

Any breed that you train correctly and you have enough time for should be fine.
All dogs like the great outdoors, food, shelter and lots of love and companionship.
If you work a lot of overtime and spend very little time at home your dog will be lonesome just like you are when you don't get to see family or friends. Remember, although a dog seems to sense when you are coming or going
they really have no sense of time. They never know if you will ever return when you leave and of course this makes them anxious.
Smaller breeds seem to not be as destructive as larger breeds (they have a harder time getting into closed garbage cans)but as with all things there are exceptions. Most of the dog breeds I have owned had special talents and all were trainable and intelligent. Read a lot of training books and repeat basic commands often to achieve the well trained dog you deserve.
Any dog left on his own with no training will most likely turn into what he is, a dog... resorting to his basic instincts, barking, digging, chewing and making himself a general nuisance.
Be a responsible owner and you will have as good a friend and companion as you could ever want no matter what the breed.
Then there are high and lower maintenance dogs. That's another story. Do you want to clip, shave and regularly groom your dog, or would you rather bathe only. Be sure to find out the expense of caring for the coat of the dog you choose.
Don't forget there are veterinarian fees including basic checkups, shots, medical needs including parasite control and injury care, possible spaying or neutering.
Getting any animal should be given careful thought. They depend on you. Are you responsible enough to care for something that will need your love and care every day ? Getting a pet is the easy part. Having a four legged pal is what I always aim for and I hope you will too.
Right now I own a Boston terrier...named Puppet. She typed this :) for you ! LOL
Good Luck

Consider rescuing a little sweet puppy from the animal shelter. A little terrier mix that will be under 30 pounds is really nice, and they do well at home alone, train easy, and are great companions. Avoid anything that is hyper or super needy in nature like a dachsund, chihuahua, poodle, yorkie, etc. If you insist on a breed, how about a Jack Russell?

someone here said a border collie- do not get a border collie if you want an inside dog. they are insanely active. and same kind of thing for big breeds in general. they need a lot of exercise. the smaller breeds like yorkies may be more expensive initially, but then with food costs etc, they are cheaper over the long run than a bigger dog. papillons are nice little dogs.
someone said jack russell terrier too- i had one, they are absolutely insane. thats a dog that needs a LOT of exercise and it will still bouce off the walls. and they bark a lot. if you're looking for an inside dog, thats not it.

A Yorkie isn't that much. I got mine like $300, the minimum. I suggest another Yorkie because I've had so many others and my two Yorkies are the best inside dogs yet!

Go to a rescue shelter in your area and adopt a mutt!! They are great and inexpensive also the shelter workers usually have an idea of the dogs personality etc and most of the dogs are already house trained etc You will be saving the dogs life and trust me rescued dogs are the most grateful and loving pets because usually they come from less than loving homes and all they want is someone to love and be loved by. PS MUTTS ARE THE BEST!!! I have 2 mutts myself.

There's no such thing as an inside dog...all dogs NEED an active life out of doors, not matter what the breed.

However, if by "an inside dog" you meant a small dog, I think Chihuahua's are great little dogs, but you have to be vigilant in training or they can become very yappy and highstrung.

I, personally, love the herding breeds. I have shelties. I have 9 of them and they all live in my house, not in a kennel. I have a fenced backyard and they get to go out and play when me or my sons go out but, like now, sleep when indoors. They are very intelligent, easy to train, very responsive to their owners, and are very beautiful. Anyone who has had one will agree with the statement that they are not just pets, they are soulmates. If you decide on one, I know good, responsible breeders from all across the county and would be happy to help you find one.

A small, low maintenance dog... I myself have a chihuahua they're very small, very low maintenance, and potty training is easy and if there's an accident its really small lol. And there VERY good watch dogs, and really really lovable! But I would suggest going to the pound, the dogs are cheaper than a pet store and a breeder, and you would be saving a life :)

adopt a puppy from the shelter...or if you want a specific breed, check out breed specific rescue groups in your area. For example, if you want to find a yorkie rescue, go to google and do a search for "yorkshire terrier rescue group" and the city you live in.
