WE will have one day at Open and one day to play in NYC.

It's probably less expensive to stay in Forest Hills, Queens (where U.S. Open is held), but the rates might be higher due to the special event. Manhattan hotel rates are high, and it's actually VERY difficult to secure a room at this peak season. (We do have the YMCA, YWCA and youth hostels.)
NYC has the finest, most efficient transportation system in the world...in spite of being the oldest (and dirtiest) subway. It's approx. 40-minute subway ride from tennis court area to midtown Manhattan. And there's many bus transportation options in NYC as well.

you may want to stay in a different area where public transportation is near (ie Westchester County, NY or Long Island, NY) and take the train in, because the rooms will be cheaper, and there are trains to take you into NYC. Plan on what you want to do the second day, because then you'll know where you need to go.
