Find a good breeder (on a recommendation) and get a healthy dog who's temperament best suits your lifestyle. If you have an apartment, try to avoid the hounds, terriers, herding and toy dogs that tend to bark a lot. English Springer Spaniels and other Sporting dogs are great if you've got the energy to exercise them. Greyhounds and Borzois are great apartment dogs - despite their size, they curl up on the couch most of the day. The bigger the dog, the longer they can go between walks and the easier they are to housebreak. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a great, friendly, quiet apartment dog.

The best type of dog for YOU is what you should ask. If you're thinking of getting a dog, do a little research. Will it be around small children? How much exercise does it require? How big will it get? What kind of temperament does it have? I've had both purebreds and mutts and I've loved them equally. They've all had different personalities just like people do.

While dogs can be fun they are a big responsibility... I would suggest you go to the local pound and check out the dogs there. A dog is alot like having a small child they depend upon you for their food water and exercise. They need to be walked, trained to behave and not use the carpert for its toilet. They can be a great companion... but what happens when you get a new boyfriend or new best friend?? They will still need you to provide for them and take them on walks. And if your still living at home and you decide its time to move out most apts do not accept dogs... I know college dorms dont either. How are you going to afford to pay to take fido to the vet when it is sick or just needs it yearly shots updates and those are required to obtain a license (this is necessasary when your pet breaks loose and someone turns it in ).
And vet bills can be very expensive I know it costs my parents over 125 each dog for an exam each yr.No I am not a child I am over 40 I dont own a dog I hear my parents complain about the costs of there two LAB/German shepard mix dogs. Dogs can be very loud barking (roxie likes to chase the squirl so she barks like she has to go out on her chain so she can go tree a squirl and send my eledery parents flying across the lawn) I would go walk the dogs for them but I live a couplde of hours away.
If you get migranes they can be a big pain in the butt the loud barking could brin one on (lol not for real but sure could casue a headache...
I would suggest volunterring at a dog shelter for a while to make sure you know what all is entaled and help out the deserted dogs also a good way to find one you want to adopt.
Ok so now I am off my soap box for the reality of how much a dog costs in time and money..
I like cocker spaniels there great dogs not to hudge but loving and they like children I had one he died when I was 6. Jack Russel Terriers are a hyper breed there cool too like EDDIE from Frasier tv show.
DEPENDS upon how much money you want to spend on dog.. Hey a really cute small dog would be the tea cup yorkie.
HAppy DOg hunting..

there is no thing such as best type of dog. i have asked these kind of questions and people say the same thing. First, you have to do research on the breed. I was thinking of a cavalier king charles spaniel for myself, but i got A west high land white terrier. He's one of the best dogs i have ever owned. Dogs come in many surprises. I suggest any kind of breed as long as it is a puppy that you get to to know (i mean see how the dog reacts and plays with you)

Traditional Border Collie is my pick for best dog:
1) They're very intelligent, in fact they're claimed to be the most intelligent breed of dog around, which means they're easily trained.
2) They're loyal, always looking at you with the love of a family member.
3) They're beautiful; their colourings are distinct and vibrant, and their long fur is silky soft.
4) They have a friendly and loving disposition, making them excellent with children and other dogs; this is because they have a natural propensity for herding and caring for other animals.
5) Lastly, their natural size makes them perfect for urban/suburban living, they're considered a medium breed dog, smaller than a lab, but bigger than a yappy lap dog.

German shepard if you like big dogs, that or a Lab.
If you want a small dog, get a Miniature schnauzer. It is all preference though, everybody thinks certain dogs are the best. You ultimately have to make the big decision for yourself.
I like schnauzers because they are family dogs, if trained properly they are very good pets, if you don't train them, they become very dominating and start to think everybody owes them something.

Pits. They have a bad rep, but if you look up who has been leading the list for number one dog attacks on humans it has been labs. Pits are great dogs, known to attack other dogs but personally I would have a pit before a lab any day.

It really depends on what you want the dog for. If you just want a companion, then dachshunds are very affectionate and do do require a lot of grooming. If you want someone that will watch the house for you, then I would get a Sheppard.

Something that won't care when you get tired of taking care of it. Like a Pound Puppy. You know, those stuffed animal toys.
