It all depends on where you are, what you did and under what jurisdiction you face. In Federal Courts, 9 years = 9 years. In a State penitentiary, most states give you credit for "good time" which means you can serve less (1/2 - 1/3 less) because you obeyed the rules followed your rehab plan.
Another way to serve less time is to be paroled and put on probation. After you have served a certain amount of time (this varies from state to state and the nature of the crime) you are eligible to appear before a parole where they will review your record and ask you questions. If the majority of the board members, you can be paroled early - however, you are on probation. If you violate your parole, you can find yourself back in prison.

Depends on the state, and on the type of crime.
In many states there is no time off for good behavior, and only if they get a parole will they get out early.
Many times they get a parole hearing at 1/3 of sentence 3 years but seldom do people get parole thier first time out.
about 2/3 is closer to a norm as long as they don't get into any trouble while they are in prison

One year equals 365 days. Therefore 9 years is 3285 days. There are circumstances involving time already served and parole. But a normal year is equal to one prison year.

Why would a prison year be 9 real years?
Im pretty sure a year is a year here or there. however on the other side of the bars I bet one year feels like nine years.

in england if a person gets 9 years he actualy does 4 and a half years...if he does remand then the figure of the actual remand times comes of this figure..so if he spent 6 months on remand he will only do 4 years. then the sentance is done.
