French is fun. French and Spanish are both pretty easy.
I think the next language I learn will either be Esperanto ( for fun), American Sign language, or learning to read lips . the last 2 would be useful to communicate in either a noisy place, like a rock concert, or a quiet place, like a library.

What are you interested in? You could even learn a language for free it you were motivated enough. The language spoken in France is called French. It is also spoken in many other countries around the world.
I think the most important thing to do is find some people to communicate with. Do you have any immigrants who live near you? You could help them learn English, while you learn their language. Some good places to look are a local college, because many students come from foreign countries. Perhaps they have a Language Club you can attend. Some public colleges have a policy to serve the community, too. This means that anyone in the area can attend programs. If you still can't find a conversation partner, perhaps you can convince a friend to learn with you. Then you would have a "secret language" to communicate in.
I have one hint that I have never read anywhere. I have found that it takes me awhile to be able to hear the different sounds of a foreign language. It seems that my ear needs to get used to the new sounds. Because of this, I think it is useful to listen to anything in your language: movies, songs, a radio show. Of course, you won't understand it, but your ear will get used to the unfamiliar sounds and rhythms. Don't be impatient, this takes time. So create your own little immersion program (This is when you go somewhere and use only that language.) See "I'd rather be in Paris" linked below.
To get started in learning French I recommend the video series, "French in Action." Videos are my favorite, because they are so convenient, and because you are able to learn without trying to translate from another language. This is frustrating at first, but is the best way to learn, because some things are impossible to translate. I borrow the videos and cassettes from the library, and I have found the textbooks available used. If your local library does not have them, then your community college library might. Your reference librarian should be able to help you find them.
My favorite audio program is the Pimsleur tapes and CDs. I like it because it asks you questions. I find this less boring than tapes which just expect you to listen. But any tape is better than just trying to learn from a book. A book is too confusing, and cannot copy the sounds exactly.
The things I've recommended were all written for adults, so you may find parts a little tough. But even babies learn by listening to adult language, so I am sure you can learn from these things as well. Besides, maybe your mom, dad, or even your whole family would like to learn along with you!
Have fun!

I speak English and French, so I feel kind of biased speaking about either one of those languages. I think that German or Russian would be incredibly cool languages to learn. English, French or Spanish would be very useful though... but I guess that ultimately depends on where you live. I've never been very interested in asian languages... I don't like the sound, but that's just me. Your best bet is to do some reading about different languages and decide which one you like best.

I don't know about languages, but France should be much easier to learn if you know French first.

If all you know is English, it'll be really hard to learn another language, cause English grammar is pretty unique. But Classical Greek is fun to learn.

Japanese and Polish, though Greek, Swedish, and generally most other East and South Asian languages are really awesome too. They might be a really cool challenge if you've just been exposed to English your whole life.
