I say just help him eat until you get the cone off of him, or maybe make the food dish higher or something so that he might be able to get to it.

I can answer part of your question. If your dog is having difficulty drinking b/c of the cone, you can either ask for a shorter one, or depending on how handy you feel, remove the cone/collar and trim down an inch or two until it gives your dog enough clearance to drink without letting it lick it's wounds. You'll have to do this a few times to get the right length. Good luck

poor thing!!! ok, right now, since he is under pain medication, he will be sleepy a lot. and that's normal. i suggest you give him peace and quiet, and not try to play with him or anything. let him rest. cause he needs it. but give him comfort. meaning, even you don't physically play with him, be by his side, pet him, kiss his nose, and talk to him like you always have been. trust me, he will get super comforted by this. and the water issue, i don't really know what cone you're talking about but is there any way you can take it off from time to time so he can drink eat? he'll probably feel better if it's off for a few minutes during the day also. but make sure you monitor him closely and don't let him lick the rod rash.

Definately dont move him around too much. There isnt much that can be done fore ribs except to let them heal on their own, and the less movement, the better they will heal. As for feeding, well, cones are supposed to allow access to food and water. If he cant get at it, check if it is tied up too far on his neck. That might be the problem. Otherwise, yes, you may have to help him eat and drink, but I would call your vet and ask if that is supposed to happen or if they can give you any advice.

I know that all you have is good intentions in mind to help with the recovery. But right now all the little guy needs is rest. Try to avoid picking him up at any cost. As far as the cone on his head.. hand feeding and watering is probably the only way right now. Good luck and I hope he gets better soon!

We just dealt with the cone thing for our dog, too, due to a hot spot on her leg. They learn how to eat with it on! To make it easier for her, I moved her food dish away from the wall so that she could get to the dish easier. And initially I put something under the bowl so it was higher and she could eat out of it. After a few days she was managing just fine with it on for eating with no special treatment.
The main thing to do now is to NOT LET THE DOG RUN LOOSE OUTSIDE! Ever!

raise the food and water like large breeds do.ans keep the road rash moist for a couple days with neosporin or lotion. DONT pick him up, let him sleep. most healing happens during sleep as the body doesnt have to do every thing else. FIX THE PROBLEM THAT LED TO THE CAR MEETING YOUR DOG!!!. good luck:)

I'm so sorry that your dog was hit by a car! I would just let your dog lay in a spot all day and let him get up (if he can) when he wants to. I would try holding his food and water dish up to his mouth so he can reach it. I bet your vet would know what to do though. Good luck!

You can always cut the e-collar (or cone) to size to that he can get to the water but it is still long enough to prevent him from licking at his wound. And trust your instincts as to what do from here. You have common sense. Leave him be, provide love and he will heal. Restrict exercise as well, obviously.
Good luck to the patient.

If he's friendly which I'm sure he is hand feed him. Get a water or baby bottle and fill it with water and just help him drink. If you can't get him to eat and or drink take him back to the vet. They may be able to help. I'm so sorry that this happened. I hope he feels better! Good luck!
