If the grill did not come with ceramic briquettes or lava rocks -- or did not come with instructions on adding them -- I would not use them. Some grills are designed with lava rocks in mind, and some are not. If it did not come with the rocks, chances are the design of the grill was made to be more efficient without them.

You don't need them, but they produce a better (more even) heat source on the grill. They are recommended for superior grilling.

No, those are just to hold in more heat to continue cooking after the flame is shut off.
