You are correct.
A lot of them have been hurt by people in church (which is not a reasonable excuse to stop going), and some are afraid they might be asked for money.
A good church does not hound people for money, but teaches the congregation basic principles of giving and allows them to give willingly and cheerfully, like the Bible says.
It's also stemming from a false paradigm - that we need to go to church for the sake of going to church.
As you said, it is where we go to get fed (spiritually), which we definitely need. We also need each other and fellowship.
I also believe that God loves corporate worship - real worship and praise, not silent meditation or obligatory ritualistic responses to memorized phrases.

If you can't worship God with only a bible in your hand, then all church will do is fill you with someone else's interpretation of the bible. By reading and interpreting for yourself, it can mean much more. Church *isn't* (not is'nt) necessary to love God.
If you feel you need to gather with like minded individuals, there are ways to do it outside of Church. This way everyone can discuss their interpretations and their feelings - equally.

God really doesn't tell us to go to church. What God tells us is to get together. I go to church, but I understand those who don't. Some feel uncomfortable with organized religion or with seperated denominations. Alot of people now work on Sunday (my husband does) some people don't like getting all dressed up, etc.
That doesn't mean that these people don't worship and love God. It just means that they don't feel the need to put on fancy clothes and sit in a room full of people who are all watching the time praying that the preacher shuts up so they can get out in time to get to the lake or not miss the game/race/movie.
The Bible is where I go to get my spiritual feeding. Church is like a weekly (Christian) "family" reunion.

Organized Religion in not being a Christian. It's very hard to find a good Church. Even the best churches are made up of humans beings, making it a less than perfect place to deal with.
I too feel that to go to Church helps my Spiritual self & growth. We are capable of being self taught but you need to read good studies along with the Bible. Watching good teaching programs like Joyce Meyers helps too.

No, not the most likley. EVERY church I have ever been to, has been full of mans ideals, mand words, mans commands, and not Gods. In turn, I am surronded by people who judge, who expect people to live as they do, and hide their sins, all the while casting stones at people who sin and repent. EVERY church I have been to is run by man, in Gods name.
Church was ordained for fellowship and growth of Christians, to learn and to grow in Christ. Church has lost its original purpose. If I can find one that has kept that, I would go. The Bible tells us though, that where two are met in his name, there will He be also. I can get a Bible study together, and be more spiritually fed, than I can in church, and thats just the sad truth of church.

Because not everyone's the same, therefore not everyone feels the most spiritual in the same place. Going to church has never felt that way to me. It depends on what you mean by 'church' though - there's two kinds. "church" is the building you gather in for Mass. "Church" is the congregation, the people, everyone united in Christ. The building (church) has never made me feel spiritual, but being with the people (Church) has.

For many people--Yes!
BUT-----
Going to church is not NECESSARY to live a Christian life.
There are many places where there are NO True Christian Churches available to attend. Yet it is still possible to lead that True Christian life.
Going to Church is GOOD - but not an essential.

everyone else made awesome points...
some people go out of habit... or because their parents forced them to young, and they stuck tot he habit. The insincerity and B.S. that is going on in churches now has shunned the truly spiritual away. you can go to a church full of people and feel that it is one big empty room. the collective energy that used to be there is no longer there.
this is what attuned me to the fact that christianity, specifically cathoilicism, was not for me. I am no longer christian, but i can at least give perspective from my past experience.

I think that many people feel that institutions of organized religion are being used for the wrong purpose. Congregation members seem to be robbing (i.e. "chiseling" off) one another for benefits from the System. Some may suspect that membership lists are being used for that purpose, as they seem to be in institutions outside the religious sector. (e.g. class lists, staff lists, substitute lists, club membership lists). People would be annoyed that such misconduct is permitted or overlooked by the clergy and the people who are running the churches.
