Why does an engineer make things to work but difficult to work on after installment. ie, turbines, compressors, pumps, etc. They need to be more worker friendly.

The short answer is that if components like turbines, compressors, pumps, etc. were designed to be easier to work on they would be far more complex, take up far more room and cost a lot more too. It makes more sense to design the components to run much longer without needing repair and to make routine maintenance as easy as possible. Compare the cars of the 50's with today's cars. The older engines took up far less room and all parts were more accessible. Now almost every cubic inch of space under the hood is taken up with mandated polution controls and electronics that increase efficiency and permit better diagnostics. If the old space relationship was maintained today's engine compartments would be huge at a time when compact cars save increasingly expensive fuel. Someone had to choose the optimum arrangement; that people would actually buy, right Stan? You really have to admire a good mechanic.

I suppose when designing something very complex the last thing you worry about is whether it,s going to be easy to work on or not. It would be nice I agree as I am an auto mechanic and that,s kind of a standing joke that "If the S.O.B. that built this piece of f***ing sh** had to work on it I bet it would be different". But it,s never gonna happen so deal with it I guess LOL.

Because when you design something on paper, the visualization occurs in your mind, which is an ideal environment where problems are often not apparent. In other words, its a virtual design environment that has a hard time visualizing problems or mistakes.

Furthermore, there is little support or economic drive to design/build something thats easy to work on. Being functional and having sales appeal, now that's important.
