My brother did the same thing. It is a symptom of severe depression... If your doing that you need to seek professional help. They put my bro on meds and he went to therapy, now he doesn't do it anymore. When you cut yourself it is a way of controlling yourself. You have control over the amount of pain you feel...in some way it coincide with the depression.Self-mutilation is a broad term for a "complex group of behaviors" resulting in destruction of one's own tissue. These behaviors, including scratching, burning or cutting the skin, pulling out hair, breaking bones, amputation , and eye enucleation, can have a likewise variable assortment of causes. In an attempt to understand the variability of these behaviors, Favazza and Roesnthal proposed what is now the commonly accepted method of classifying self-mutilation. There are three observable categories, based on the degree of harm, the rate, and the pattern of behavior. These are Major, Stereotypic, and Superficial.

It's generally referred to by professionals as self mutilation, i doubt the people who do cut themeselves are to picky about what they call it...as far as saying someone is stupid for doing such a thing and if you have any feelings for human life then you should be ashamed of yourself...what you've said is no different than saying that a person who was hit in a wreck by a drunk driver and suffered major brain trauma resulting in a permanent vegitative condition is stupid because they can't talk. Imagine how hurt you must be inside to actually cut yourself...call it sad, call it serious, call it scary, but don't call it stupid

Self-mutilation is a general term for a variety of forms of intentional self-harm without the wish to die. Cutting one's skin with razors or knives is the most common pattern of self-mutilation. Others include biting, hitting, or bruising oneself; picking or pulling at skin or hair; burning oneself with lighted cigarettes

Self mutilation. If you know someone that does this, get them help. It is generally done as a cry for help, or attention. But if they hit the radial artery bcause they became a little over zealous, it is potentially fatal.

Abuse. Most people cut because they are depressed, and really there is no scientific term for it, it is referred to as "self mutilation," "cutting," and "slitting," but inflicting harm on one's self in any way is simply abuse.
