We crave acceptation from others. That includes our beliefs, they are very personal

I don't think that " 'prove' their beliefs to others" quite captures what's going on. What's REALLY going on is called 'validation'.

A person's 'belief systems' are a key component of their 'self-description'... sort of like 'filters', through which input from the universe is interpreted. THe output of these filters is one's persona 'subjective reality'. Here are the filters:

* Misconceptions
* Prejudices
* Belief Systems
* Experiential Reference
* Knowledge base

People seek to validate their 'self-description' by seeking out people whose beliefs are congruent with their own, or seeking to change the beliefs of people whose beliefs differ from their own. Finding agreement reinforces the self-description and self-importance. When their beliefs are challenged, they tent to react with anger and aggression, since such challenges are subconsciously regarded as an attack upon the 'self'. This is really just a manifestation of fear.

Because they feel so strongly about it; not everybody feels the need to prove it to an innocent bystander, but when it's attacked, just about anybody who really believes their faith woul argue to prove it, if for no other reason than to prove that they're just as disillusioned as the next guy.

Because they doubt it themselves. That's the only reason to preach, if you are happy in your beliefs--you would be an exmple by your life lived, not by pushing it on to other people

AND AS FAR AS THE TRUE CHURCH IS CONCERNED WE GUIDE YOU TO THE TRUTH BUT IT IS UP TO GOD TO OPEN YOUR EYES AND EARS.
Re 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
