My husband was weeding this morning and ran into a yellow jacket nest in the ground. They seemed awfully small but stung him just the same. I was able to poison them and cover the hole with a large rock and don't see them any longer. Do they re-nest close to an old nest? We have a mole problem living in the woods with lots of mole holes. I read that they will use existing holes to nest so I have a great concern they won't go far to re-nest.
Does anyone know if this is the time of year, if they are starting to produce, to be so small?
We live in Western Washington.

If you sprayed the nest thoroughly, you may have killed the queen. At this time of year, if the queen is killed the others will quickly wander off and die. If the queen escaped, then the nest will be re-established.
